Default XP Boot up problems..

I had a lot of problems with my laptop today. My brother tried
reinstalling Windows to fix some corrupted files. I finally got to the
Windows log in screen after reinstalling but it froze up so I rebooted,
but I got a BSOD the next time. I tried restarting again but got
another BSOD, and then again and got a message saying that
windows\system32\config\system was missing or corrupted. We put in
some commands to try to repair it from the recovery disk but whenever I
get to the the "Windows is starting up screen" it does nothing for 5
minutes and then I get a BSOD. Any help would be appreciated.

"If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen,

steps:

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software
manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problem continues, disable or remove and new installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If
you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable compnents, restart your

Hello,

Stop 0x00000024 or NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
The Stop 0x24 message indicates that a problem occurred within Ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system
drives. A similar Stop message, 0x23, exists for the file allocation table (FAT16 or FAT32) file systems.

#1. Run CHKDSK in XP Recovery Console:
Set pc BIOS to boot from CDROM. Place XP CD in drive. Reboot from the CD. Select the first option R Repair/Recovery Console. Select your Windows
partition by number. Usually it is 1 . Login to XP with administrator password. Then run CHKDSK /P from the command line. (In Recovery console /P replaces /F ).

Run it once (or repeat) until it shows no errors. This should clear the "dirty" flag on the disk drive C. Run CHKDSK for each drive on your system.
CHKDSK /P :X where X is letter for disk drive

To exit the Recovery Console, use the EXIT command.

Thank you for your suggestion. My brother tried it (because I am fairly
computer illiterate when it comes to fixing them). I walked back into
the room and saw another error after he tried it. At the boot from CD
screen, it says "NTLDR is missing." My brother does not know what to
do now, he suggests that I reinstall Windows again...but I thought the
reason I got the BSOD earlier was because of reinstalling Windows
conflicting with something else, so I don't know if this would fix it.
Any more recommendations?

I fixed the NTLDR missing problem by just copying it from the recovery
disk. I tried reinstalling Windows several times but now after the CD
boot screen, the screen just goes black and stays black. I
unintentionally reformatted the other day when I was assured the
recovery would be non-destructive, so it doesn't really matter if what
I need to do would have otherwise jeopardized my files seeing as how
they're scrapped now. Anyways, I don't know what to try now...

EDIT: After leaving the screen blank for some time (I'm guessing
around 20 minutes) the system restarted. Now I'm getting a
windows\inf\biosinfo.inf file is missing or corrupt error. I've tried
searching for people with that error but all of them have previously
tried installing software first or something else. My computer is
freshly reformatted.

It is not right, do a repair.

Boot off of a clean Windows XP cd ( your bios has to be set to boot
from cd rom 1st ) choose Install ( Not To Repair a Windows XP
installation using Recovery Console, press R ) at the first prompt.
It will then search for a previous copy of Windows.
When it finds your copy, it will stop at the next prompt and ask if you
want to do a repair. Hit R at this screen.
If it does'nt mention a repair DO NOT continue.
It will then copy a lot of files and appear to be doing a reinstall (
But its not. All your programs and data are safe, all you will lose,
are your Windows updates )

I've already tried that before. And I've completely reinstalled Windows
several times. And yes, my harddrive IS wiped.
After you hit enter to install, I see no option to repair with R. The
screen still goes black after the boot from CD screen and eventually it
restarts and says biosinfo.inf is missing or corrupt.. Every other
topic I have found about this it seems people have been installing
software and that leads to the error and tutorials tell them to remove
it with the Control Panel. Well I haven't installed any new software
(I mean, there are no programs left anyways). Plus, I can't get to the
desktop. Even hitting F8 at startup doesn't open boot options so I
can't even try to boot in safe mode. Is there anything else I can try?

I would start again, to me, it appears the HD has not been cleaned
properly.
Use both of these, start with Zap 1st.

Zap
http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/as...lsRefs.htm#ZAP
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm
Zap is a DOS software utility that writes zeroes to the first 128
sectors on a hard disk drive, including the Master Boot Record and the
first Partition Boot Record. It can be used with both SCSI and IDE
drives. This function is now included in the Drive Fitness Test.

=======================================

WIPE OUT
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/wipeout.zip
Freeware.
WIPE OUT: as the name implies, this utility will absolutely WIPE your
hard drive. For those times when an industrial strength cleaner is
needed to remove any pesky files Fdisk may have left behind. A readme
file is included in the zip file. WARNING...WIPE OUT will remove ALL
data from the Hard Drive.

DIRECTIONS

1- Unzip file
2- Copy WIPEOUT to a Win9x boot disk
3- Boot with Win9x disk, make sure the bios is set to boot from floppy
1st.
4- At the A:\ type "wipeout c: /nq /np" (no quotes)
/nq = no queries - you will not be asked if you are sure.
/np = no partitions - this will overwrite the MBR

Press Enter.

Now run fdisk to set up partitions.

When done, reboot & format.

John - I've done everything you said, every last thing, but now I'm back
to square one. When I boot, I get hung up on the exact same black
screen. Is it possible that this is being caused by certain drivers
missing now that its a clean system? If so, how can they be reinstalled
without Windows loading? I'm afraid I have no idea what to do now. =(

The drivers should be on the XP cd & loaded during the install. Here
are some other ways to try.

Computer Stops Responding with a Black Screen When You Start Windows
Windows XP Stops Responding at the Welcome Screen
Blank Screen or Operating System Cannot Load Profile at Logon
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q314503
SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to start Windows XP, the computer may appear to stop
responding (hang) with an empty, black screen immediately after the
power-on self test (POST) is complete and before the Windows logo
normally appears on the screen.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if one or more of the following elements are
corrupted:
Master boot record
Partition tables
Boot sector
NTLDR file
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Create a Microsoft Windows XP boot disk to start the computer.
For additional information about how to create a Windows XP boot disk,
click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base:
HOW TO: Create a Boot Disk for an NTFS or FAT Partition in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;305595
If you can start the computer from the boot disk without receiving an
error message, the damage is limited to the master boot record, the
boot sector, or the NTLDR file. After Windows is running, you should
immediately back up all data before you attempt to fix the boot sector.
Use Disk Management to view the partition information and verify that
the disk partition (or partitions) are correct. To use Disk Management,
follow these steps:
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage on the
shortcut menu that appears.
Expand Storage, and then click Disk Management.
If invalid partitions are present or you are unable to start your
computer with a boot disk, consider reinstalling Windows XP on your
computer and restoring your data and configuration information from a
recent backup.
If you do not have a current backup copy of the data on the computer,
consult a computer specialist to determine the best method of data
recovery and configuration.
Run a current virus scanning program to verify that no virus is
present.
Repair the master boot record by using the FIXMBR command from the
Windows XP Recovery Console.
For additional information about how to use the Recovery Console, click
the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base: 307654 HOW TO: Access the Recovery Console During Startup
Recovering Windows XP using the Recovery Console

http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/0...boot_toot2.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307654
NOTE: For additional information about an error message that you may
receive when you use the FIXMBR command, click the article number below
to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 266745 Error
Message When You Run fixmbr Command
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503
WARNING: If your computer is infected with a virus and you use the
FIXMBR command, you may be unable to start the computer. Before you use
this command, ensure that the computer is not infected with a virus.
If the primary boot partition is a FAT partition, use the FIXBOOT
command from the Windows XP Recovery Console to write a new boot sector
on the system partition, and then use the FIXMBR command to repair the
master boot record.
You may also use Windows XP Setup to repair the installation. To do
this, follow these steps:
Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer. On the Welcome to
Setup screen, press ENTER to set up Windows.
Press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Use the ARROW keys to select the Windows installation that you want to
repair, and then press R.
Windows Setup repairs the installation files, Windows automatically
restarts, and then Setup completes the repair of your Windows XP
installation.
Follow the remaining steps to set up Windows.
NOTE: You will need your 25-character Product Key to complete these
steps.

stupidly misleading phrase.
The option to repair with the recovery console is before you hit enter
to install.

the repairing 'off the cd' option that was suggested is after you hit
enter to install

May I suggest that the friend that is fixing your computer responds to

well, no matter how stupidly you go about trying to reinstall windows,
then
if the screen suddenly goes blank stopping you from reinstalling
windows, then it sounds like you've got some kind of nasty hardware
problem. You're going to have to try replacing things (like hard drives
and cdroms ) and even trying diff IDE connectors(there are only 2).
You could try a diff windows cd, but it's prob a HW problem.

If you couldn't reinstall windows then what use is safe mode going to
be. BTW, if you could get into windows you could get into safe mode.
Or, you could edit boot.ini manually to get in. To do with adding
/safeboot to a line. (not to be confused with 9x's msdos.sys
bootsafe=0/1)

Not being able to hit F8 is a problem i've had.
If you have a Ps2 keyboard you could probably hit F8. I've foudn it to
be a USB issue. USB has to be enabled in the BIOS, and if still going
wrong then the BIOS has to be flashed -upgraded to suppoer usb properly
-a risky procedure .
Replacing hardware is very easy for a competent person
