Utilities question

I just downloaded a free copy of Glary Utilities Pro, an offer from CNET. How reliable and safe are these utility programs that supposedly clean up your Windows system? I just ran one thing, which searched for empty folders on my system, and it found 4,400 of them. I manually checked a number and sure enough, they were empty folders. So, I deleted them (but they're still in my recycle bin for now.) So are programs like this safe to use? I donwloaded this one because it was a CNET offer and I always took them to be reliable. Thanks. I've used Glary utilities for several years with no ill-effects that I can see. I use it mainly for deleting .TMP files before backing up my disks, though it doesn't seem to delete them all. My main gripe with it is that it offers me about 5 updates for each time I use it. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk |

Hi rfdjr1, If you are suffering from junkware due to this, drop me a line under a new thread (Ping Todd) and I will walk you through how to remove it/them -T Thanks for the offer T but I'm good. I run a malware program in the background and do a weekly scan. So far, so good. |

Utilities question
| I am very sorry, but someone who calls CCleaner junkware (to be cleaned
| up) is clueless to me. | I find it mysterious that CCleaner has such a devoted following. The same fervor is displayed every time it's mentioned. Several people have expressed an opinion that such utilities are mostly snake oil, without any disagrement voiced. Yet with the mention of CCleaner the fan club gets angry. On their website they claim to clean up junk files: OK, but Windows can do that.... Delete browser history: Browsers can do that.... Clean the Registry: Risky business that provides no benefit. The logic for Registry cleaners simply doesn't hold water. That topic has been discussed many times before. And that list of functions sounds to me like a dozen other similar "PC tune-up" programs. They all provide the same function: They're equivalent to waxing your car and hanging a new perfumed paper pine tree from the rear view mirror. It won't help your car to run better, but it does provide a sense of having cleaned up and improved one's car. And the benefit is in reverse proportion to one's understanding of cars. The less one knows about mechanics, and the more one projects an animistic personality onto one's car, the better those rituals seem to work and the more one's car seems to appreciate the effort. |

Utilities question
| As I said befo use ONLY the cleaner function of CCleaner.
| | Did you ever look or try? I looked today, as I described above. I've never tried it. I didn't see anything listed that made sense, so I see no point in trying it. I don't need a utility to clean files or browser history or Registry settings. (Maybe the latter is not included in what you call "ONLY the cleaner", but you didn't explain that, so I don't know.) | The Slim and the Portable version do not contain crapware. I don't suspect it of containing crapware. I suspect it of being crapware. On the bright side, cleaning temp files and browser history is unlikely to do any harm. |

And I've never had colon cancer. |
