source: disk, event id: 51, winxp sp2 clean install sata hd errors
subject: source: disk, event id: 51, winxp sp2 clean install sata hd errors
with nvidia nforce4 based board and nvidia chipset/platform drivers hi there, just recently built some amd athlon64 based system (asus a8n-sli premium, nvidia nforce4 board), 2gig (2x 1gig ddr pc400 sticks), some nvidia geforce 6600 gfx card and one sata samsung sp2504c (250 gig) drive. http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/SpinPointPSeries/HardDiskDrive_SpinPointPSeries_SP2504C_sp.htm i did a clean winxp sp2 install, formatted the whole drive (thorough format, ntfs) as c: and installed all the patches on windowsupdate then i installed the nvidia (original from nvidia.com driver downloads) platform / nforce drivers for nforce4 AMD - winxp (nForce4 AMD Edition (6.66) - Windows XP/2000 (32-Bit), Version: 6.66, Release Date: July 15, 2005, WHQL Certified) right after this step and rebooting winxp sp2 the hard disk made more noise than usual. it seemed (during the boottime animated winxp logo with the blue progress/activity bar) as if the drive was loading a lot of small little files/sectors/things or jumping back and forth or running some kinda compatiblity mode or something. it reminded me of the past like for example booting into safe mode on win9x or on win2000, when the system would like load and log the drivers and files in a very thorough and slow way.... so it made a lot of noise for the following few seconds, then the logon screen was there and the harddisk speed and acitivity seemed doing fine again. i immediately checked the system log and there i was getting these new entries of event id 51 with the disk as the source. i was wondering what was wrong here, and i actually have another spare disk of the same kind (same model, same capacity, also sata) i did another test install onto this also completely new disk, formatted the whole again as c: and the same results appeard. as soon as i installed the nvidia platform driver and let it install the nvidia sata drivers, during the next bootup i got this slight little noise from the disk. when i reboot and run windowsxp sp2 now and then most of the times its doing just fine, also during use and testing. i dont always get these event id 51 errors, but when i get them its right after the two nvata log entries in the system log. i will post some examples of the system log: --------------- Event Type: Information Event Source: nvata Event Category: None Event ID: 2 Date: 09.01.2005 Time: 07:55:27 User: N/A Computer: BOX Description: Device identified. Hi,
1. Have you installed the chipset drivers and utility drivers from the CD that came with the mobo? 2. How do you configure the mobo BIOS? How do you configure the mobo BIOS? there are plenty of things to set in the bios. i just activated all the sata ports that come onboard. the disks is connected to the nvidia sata ports and are properly detected. in the devicemanager, ide/atapi controllers, nvidia nforce4 serial ata controller and properties there the disc is also being displayed correctly. the primary channel in the properties has following settings: samsung sp2504c serial ata generation 2 - 3G (serial ata 1.0 with extensions II with 3gigabit max transferspeed i guess..) the checkboxes are all set: let bios select transfer mode enable read caching enable write caching enable command queuing thats all.... again: so far, these event id 51 disk errors appeared only during boot time immediately after the system log has those two nvata entries. i actually wonder why there are two nvata entries right after each other, as there is only one hard disk connected to the serial ata ports. oh i actually just found out that the nvidia nforce4 parallel ata controller is also being accessed by the nvata driver, so the chipset driver package installed the nvata drivers for both the serial ata and parallel ata controllers and i have a cdrom connected to the secondary channel as slave drive of the parallel atat controller of the nforce4. anyone at microsoft able to make any sense of the hex-dump error codes in these event 51 syslog messages? would be great if microsoft/nvidia could fix this behaviour and find out whats wrong here. thanks and cheers. |

Hello,
"Peter" wrote: pls go to asus website to have a look: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us i dont get the picture of what you are trying to tell me. this driver at nvidia.com is the latest and officially certified by microsoft. the asus website features the same version v6.66 http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/nvidia/Chipset_Win2K3_V666.zip so why should i bother. unfortunately this doesnt me anywhere.... i have the latest bios, i did all the bios upgrading before installing any operating system on this test box, and ever since i installed the nvidia drivers the disk errors started appearing. so it has to do something with the drivers and low level interaction between the operating system the drivers and the disks i guess. cheers. |
