Default Automatic Updates causes svchost.exe to crash - what to do?

Shortly after logging into my windows xp media center sp2, the svchost.exe
would crash and the system would become unresponsive.

using MSCONFIG to isolate problem:

All services except for Automatic Updates have been turned on.
When i manually start automatic updates, the svchost.exe crashes a few
seconds later.

As long as i disable Automatic Update service my system seems fine.

How do i configure my system to allow automatic updates without crashing?

Some system file might be corrupt. To repair all system files, go to
Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
