How do I get my modem to disconnect from the phone line
when I get off the internet?

Jay,
If you want to automatically to disconnect when you shut IE, then in IE,
click on toolsInternet options flip to the connections tab and select the
desired connection and click on settings. Next to the masked password, you
will see a advanced button, click it and put a check next to "Disconnect
when connection may no longer be needed".
