I am running Win7 64bit and had some Optional Updates today. One of them was
"Skype for Windows". I did not update it and moved it to "Hidden" - what is
this program and is it necessary?

Thanks for any insights.

It would be nice if screen sharing worked on Android tablets, but I
haven't discovered a way to do it.

I've never looked, but I wonder if MS has an iOS version, or if MS just
doesn't care about stealing an Apple user or two. :-(

IMO, tablet interfaces suck. LOL

Default Skype for Windows - What is it?

Steve Hayes wrote:

Skype is a Voice over Internet (VoIP) program that lets you telephone
other people using the Internet rather than the public switched
telephone network (PSTN). It means the calls aren't metered.

If you're willing to pay, Skype can gateway its service to POTS and cell
phone providers, too. You'll get a regular telephone number in addition
to your Skype number. So you can call those users and they can call
you. It's how Microsoft generates revenue with Skype.

The program is necessary if you want to use Skype to talk to someone
else who uses Skype.

Skype to Skype is free. As such, it became Microsoft's replacement IM
(instant messenger) service. Skype to telco costs money.

Since the OP didn't know what is Skype, it is very unlikely he knows
anyone that uses Skype so the free Skype-to-Skype service would be of no
use to him. He would end up paying Microsoft to get PSTN access via
Skype to make calls.

Can't tell what are the prices to cite here since Microsoft price pages
are dead (looks like a script busy timeout).
