There's talk of an inevitable requirement for a subscription
(already in place for the Pro version ?), so you can go right on
paying for it !

Personal data gathering and pop-up adds are outragious !

For me, still NOT a good idea.

I'll stay with 7 ...

Has been working much better for me that 7 or 8 on my laptops. Not sure
why there's been all this, what oft-times seems to be kneejerk,
opposition to Windows 10.

It's not as if the concerns haven't been written about, over and over, ad
nauseam, for the past year. I'm not sure how you've missed it.

+1 for BBB's suggestion.

If you haven't done your Win10 install by now,
you're going to need to be a First Rate Rocket Scientist

multiple kicks-at-the-can.

The end date/deadline is firm

Any suggestions?

I'll jump in, but I haven't read everyone's replied, maybe this has been
covered already: Do like I did last night, image your whole drive (I use
TeraByte's Image for Windows, but Ghost or Acronis or whatnot work just
as well). Then burn the Win10 DVD (10586 if you can) and run Setup from
inside Win7. Do the upgrade (tell Win10 to keep nothing). Boot into W10
and make sure it's activated, then boot your imaging tool and put
everything back the way it was. There, free Win10 for when you will need
in, say in 8 years...

Regards,

By upgrading, you have already lessened the frustration when MS releases
Window 11 or what ever they call the next version.

That's demonstrably untrue. Just ask the folks who went from 7 to 10
versus the folks who went from 8 to 10. Their relative frustration
levels didn't seem to be very different. If you want to avoid
frustration, you don't upgrade more often, you upgrade less often!

That's *very* true in the case of MSFT OS products. After win95osr2, I
realised that win2ksp4 was *the* ultimate windows OS for me. There was
more wrong than right with each of its successors (and getting 'wronger'
with each of winXP's descendants).

When the ice cream truck comes through the neighborhood and offers me a free
"crap-on-a-stick-sickle", I'm able to say no. With Win10, considering what
all comes with it, it's equally easy to say no. Win10 is far from free, but
it's marketed that way, and people fall all over themselves trying to get
something free, somehow not realizing what they've signed up for.

It breaks computers with just slightly complex setups, like having an
SSD and an HDD in the same computer, and you've moved your Users folder
to the HDD.

Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers
and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one.
Email list-server groups and USENET are like having all of those
newspapers delivered to your door every morning.

Nicely put.

I was nagged into trying the upgrade on a sacrificial PC, but install
aborted saying the processor didn't support the NX instruction, so my
foray into the "joys" of Win10 was mercifully short-lived.

A friend has it and he's forever havnig to restore because the latest
update (about which you are not told anything and are not given the
option to refuse) has broken something. On two occasions it's rendered
the machine unbootable and he's had to reinstall from scratch.

To coin a phrase, **** that for a game of soldiers.
