Default Portable Windows user ID on a thumb drive

Interesting. Many cloud services provide the option to save, delete,
manage files via Windows Explorer(Win7 and earlier) and File
Explorer(Win 8 and later).

Are those same users incapable of saving, deleting, and managing files
on USB sticks using Windows Explorer ?

In fact, with OneDrive and GoogleDrive, you tell the sync client which
folder(s) to keep in sync and it's done automatically thereafter. Users
don't interface with the sync client. They just manipulate the files in
the folder the same way they do with any other files: Windows Explorer.
If you delete a file in the folder, it gets deleted up on the server.
If you rename a file in the folder, it gets renamed up on the server.
If you add a file in the folder, it gets added up on the server. The
webclient for the online storage is just a web page that is pretty easy
to understand. Downloading, uploading, and manipulating files using the
webclient is just as easy as used a webmail client.

If the users can't figure out how to manipulate files in the sync
folder(s) or use the webclient then they have no business being on a
computer. Little children introduced to computers in grade school can
figure out how to use Windows Explorer. Installing the client is, as it
should be, the admin's job. That's one of the duties for which the
admin is responsible. The sync folder(s) can be a special folder or any
folder, like My Document, My Pictures, d:\shared\docs, and so on. The
users don't even need to know which folders are synchronized, especially
if this is merely a means of backup and the users never do use the web
client to manage their files there. However, I suspect the users can
easily figure out how to use the download and upload functions in the
web client to get at their files from somewhere else. Even if these
computers are for use by retarded or austistic children, they often can
do more than those not experienced with handling figure they can do.

The users don't install the sync client. The admin does that. The
admin can even setup the online storage accounts for the students. The
users don't interface with the sync client (unless they want to change
which folders get synced). All the users do is use Windows Explorer.
If they have a problem with figuring how to use Windows Explorer then
saving or synching their files elsewhere is not of primary concern as
you or their instructors have to first get past the Windows for Dummies
stage in their training.
