Cloning from HDD to a SSD.
I have a new Samsung SSD 850EVO 500GB that has come with its own "Data
Migration" software. The instructions give suitable OS up to Win8 only. Should I use this software for cloning the old HDD to the Samsung SSD, or better to use the Macrium cloning feature that I have used before for cloning? Peter |

Peter I tried a search on your Samsung product, and the software isn't bulletproof. There was one report of it failing to resize to fit a larger HDD to a smaller SSD. I would think Macrium would be OK, for most conventional purposes. Since Macrium edits boot files on the target, there is always a chance that a complicated enough configuration, might not get fully edited. Since you're cloning, you don't really care. Do the clone, disconnect the original drive, use the clone, test it. If it breaks, move on to the next cloning software package. What could go wrong ? :-) Paul |

Peter I installed a Samsung SSD several months ago, before upgrading from W7 to W10, and their "Data Migration" software didn't work for me (can't remember now what the problem was). Put the original HDD back as C: and cloned that with Macrium Reflect free (using a Macrium boot CD) to a USB drive, took the HDD out, put the SSD in as C: and then used Macrium boot CD to put that clone onto the SDD. Worked with no problem. |

Shut down when the clone operation finishes. Remove the old drive and install the SSD. Boot and enjoy life. You shouldn't have to do two clone operations. |

Yes I almost did that, then decided to play safe and make an "off line" clone of the HDD first in case something went pear shaped (me or the software) and I ended up with a scrambled HDD. Bit of "measure twice cut once" mentality on my part I guess. |

Peter You can use anything you like but it's best to check TRIM is enabled afterwards: http://www.windowscentral.com/how-ensure-trim-enabled-windows-10-speed-ssd-performance -- Brian Gregory (in the UK).
