a W10 quickie
Didn't think I would, but made a couple of good independent backup images
(free Macrium Reflect, and the built-in W7 method) then threw the Never10.exe toggle switch, downloaded all WU, then set WU it to automatic updates. Wa lah, it soon popped up a big window offering W10 and I let it proceed. It took awhile to setup, maybe a couple of hours. I poked around for an hour or so in W10, didn't see anything I liked, nor any advantage, only some new strange things to figure out. I then attempted to make a backup image of W10 with the built-in W7 method, which failed. Don't know why. I didn't try free Macrium Reflect. So I reverted to W8.1 using their built-in rollback, which wasn't easy to locate (had to google it, and even then it wasn't easy). I didn't trust it entirely so then also restored my own W8.1 backup image and am hopefully none the worse for wear. Seems OK. Tried both images, both worked. Supposedly that gives me the option to upgrade to W10 for free again anytime in future, according to the scuttlebutt floating around. But now there are rumors it won't really be free, a monthly subscription service of some such. So I'll probably just stick to W8.1 as long as it's still working OK. -- RandyM |

If their computers have specialized hardware and software, I'd say that Win10 is a very risky OS. In any practical sense, it's an unusable OS. Because you can't trust it. For example, if the house was on fire, and you need the computer to shut down *right now*, it would give you the finger and "do updates". So instead of being a "willing servant", it's has a mind of its own. If you need to benchmark something on a Win10 PC, in the interest of making it reproducible by others, forget it. Some "important maintenance" will always pop up in the middle of the run. Yes, we can cut the nuts off it, but if we do, it's just Win8.1 ... There's no point hacking it to bits. If you need a computer that listens to you, use some other OS. As evidence of this, be busy typing something, and out of the corner of your eye, see the Cortana circle icon dancing around. Your concentration will go right out the window. I got some idea of the stark contrast the other day, when using Ubuntu Studio. I selected "Suspend" (Sleep) from the menu, and in 1.5 to 2 seconds, it was asleep. I'm so used to draggy computers doing their own thing, I was a bit worried a file system would get damaged by something that fast :-) But that's how sleep should work. Paul |

I have to do updates" http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/ARJ8cAGm6JE/maxresdefault.jpg Paul |
