Default Windows 10 Update

Mine updated while I was away Tuesday because I forgot and left it on. I just
got back and read the sticky notes on the right side which told me I had been
all updated. When I went into the system dialog to updates then to updates
history it said the cumulative did not install. I followed the links to the
downloads for my x64 box and downloaded the stand alone installer to my
desktop then double clicked it. It splashed and flashed and zipped some
dialogs on my screen so fast I could not read them and finally it gave me a
box that said this update has already been installed on my machine. I went
back to the system dialog t updates then to updates history and it still says
the cumulative updated did not install with no indication that it had
otherwise installed correctly. The dialog offered the previous links for me
to follow. I said "no thanks". I did that once all for naught but heart
palpitations and shallow breathing. Everything seems to be running fine but
it still says KB4054517 failed to install 0x80070643. The links to the .net
tool are dead.

Thanks for the adventure, Microsoft. It's been real.

I have learned not to obsess about updates.

Once in a while one won't install and I've found that immediately trying
again does not always work either. A few days later or perhaps a week,
it finally installs OK.

Same here, It'll drive you crazy if you expect updates to work correctly,
let alone have Update History tell the truth. I've had Update History
tell me an update failed, yet winver shows it installed.

Also, I've had similar inconsistent reporting on Windows Defender.

Even a cold boot doesn't solve the 'reporting' inconsistencies. Only time
works these things out.

I liken it to trying to get Comcast to fix something. I just wait until
it fixes itself.

In the Start : Run box, you can enter "winver"
and determine your patch level. 16299.125 or whatever.

You can acquire an update manually, download it, double-click
the .msu to install it. That's if you were still at 16299.98
or 16299.15 or whatever. The "Cumulative" part allows the
update to handle whatever 16299 is already there.

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...px?q=KB4054517

And the latest info page, shows the point releases. Using
the failed KB number, you can look it up and see the rest of them.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...date-kb4054517

When preparing a VM, I sometimes grab all these files before
starting the install, so I can "race ahead" of the lethargic
normal process, and finish the process in minimal time. Then
the only way the OS can annoy me, is with msmpeng scans and
search indexer activity.

Hard part for me was to simply stop obsessing.

I have been using Win10 a lot lately and getting used to it.

All in all it's smooth operating.
In the past three days I've spent 30 hours scanning old negatives.

My uncle's estate left me a box of negatives from 1935 - 1955 and my
machine handled it without the slightest glitch...I was doing other work
while scanning etc

What are you using to scan the negatives. It sounds like you have
quite a few to scan as I have. Doing it three at a time as my stand
alone scanner does takes for ever.

If it is an automatic scanner what is the brand and model.

Thank you.

Sometimes when updates do not install, I have had some success running
the Update Troubleshooter.

Right click the MS Icon, type in Troubleshoot and select the
Troubleshoot in System settings.

You are lucky. My laptop decided to update in the middle of a large mail
merge print job, It took 40 minutes to get back to the point in the
printing process I was at before the Upgrade started.

Sorry to but in, but I have
http://www.konicaminoltasupport.com/...ua.3204.0.html
Used it years ago to scan some 1000 slides (a year or so of time).
The only issue is that it only had drivers for XP. I kept a dual boot
of XP and Win7 for years. Now I have no XP. I do have the scanner
though, even though I don't know why. It only did 35MM slides or
negatives in a caddy I think 4 at a time.

Mine is an Epson V600 and it was only $225 or so.

It can scan a dozen 35mm at a time or up to four medium format or slides.

It works better and faster than a rather old, professional scanner I have
that new must have cost several thousand dollars.

In the 35mm mode it does an excellent job of scanning each frame into
individual jpgs.

For a bit more money though, Epson has scanners that will scan more film
or slides at a time.

I think they even have one that can scan 4 x 5 but I have found the the
one I have has a large enough area to be able to do it with only minor
cropping.

At any rate, Epson scanners are the way to go

No need to apologize, Usenet is for everyone.

The one I have that is similar to yours is a Nikon.

That also only has drivers for up to XP however it will work with newer
operating systems but only 32 bit.

I have a 32bit Win7 machine that it will work on...but the drivers will
not work on a 64bit machine.

My guess is it would even work on the 32 bit version of Win10

Now that my machines are 8 - 16 gigs of RAM I of course use 64bit
operating systems.

Does it have a WIA driver, work in 64-bit applications and in Windows
10? My figgin' Canon 4200f only has a 32-bit TWAIN that has been most
problematic in 7 & 10

I guess you will have to investigate that but it works absolutely great
on my Win10 64 bit machine

I used that once and not knocking the program just the user, but I
locked the machine down so much I had problems with getting a lot of
things to work. So just don't do like I did and turn every friggin'
thing off. Be cautious and do a few things at a time. :-)

you are the most stupid person I have seen on the Internet this
Christmas. Why use 3rd party tools to stop Windows update when the OP
can so it from within Windows by going to services app and disabling
Windows update.

Why did your parents not abort you in fetus when the scan would have
told them that they have a stupid idiot baby.
