XP sp2 crash!!!!!!!!!!
After installing a series of the XP Home sp2 updates my
Sony VAIO laptop slowed to a crawl. After reading up on my installed software manuals, I learned that my Roxio GoBack program gets a glitch when service packs or updates are installed without REMOVING Roxio first. Too late! I had already done the deed, so I began removing each of the updates in reverse chrono order (listed in the add/remove programs section). When I got to the removal of about the sixth most recent update right in the middle of the removal and restore process a window pops up and says "Can't copy file *****.***", with the options of "RETRY" or "CANCEL". After about six times clicking retry to no avail (big surprise, right?) I hit cancel. Now another window pops up and exclaims "Windows may not work properly without file copying the file", but by this time "cancel" was my only viable option. Long story short, after canceling the system rebooted, but will not go into windows no matter what. I have tried safe mode, last good boot, debug, and every other option. The machine only gets as far as the windows startup screen and then justs reboots and tries to crank windows up over and over, again. Sony says I have to use the restore disks is my only option, but doing that will erase 2 months of unbacked up data that I NEED. My techy friends say I could use the Windows XP Home boot disks, which I tried, but the "repair" option didn't work. Now they tell me I have to restore the lost critical file by installing XP Home over, again, but to do that with the restore disk set you have to have an XP CD-ROM and SONY doesn't give those out with their OH SO WONDERFUL laptops (arghhh!) Has anyone had this, or similar problems, and can they give me any options for restoring this file without losing all my precious data??? Much Thanks, eXasPerated |

XP sp2 crash!!!!!!!!!!
The original poster meant the updates that are flagged as SP2
The "...series of the XP Home sp2 updates ..." is the give away - a series !! Anyway chances are the original poster has the well documented slow down after MS03-13 package see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=819634 -- Regards, Mike -- Mike Brannigan [Microsoft] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights Please note I cannot respond to e-mailed questions.
