Default Norton 360 and Installer failure

I recently uninstalled Norton 360 in response to an error message that I
received from that program. When I went to re-install I received an error
message indicating that ""Setup cannot run because there was a problem
authenticating your Microsoft Windows Instalaller". I attempted to re-install
the windows installer from the Symantec website and received another error
message indicating that "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file
Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer".
Symantec support was not able to assist me any further and sugested that I
contact Microsoft. I am having difficulty contacting the technical support so
was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions.
Frustrated

You can't call Microsoft unless you want to pay them. But you can google for
the latest version of Windows Installer for download (3.1, I believe). You
can also google for the exact error message you're seeing.

Personally, I abhor Norton's desktop stuff - it's huge and bloated, and
Symantec support leaves much to be desired. I'd use a hardware firewall
appliance, the windows firewall, and decent plain-vanilla antivirus
software.

I tried to install Installer 3.1 but I get the following error:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf.
Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer".

I have no idea how to get past that one.

And what did you find when you googled for the message? :-)

Default Norton 360 and Installer failure

I have chased this porblem all over the Net and my computer and have recorded
the following list of issues:

When I attempt to install Installer V3.1 I receive the error

KB893803v2 Setup eror:
Setup could nodt verify the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic
service is running on this computer.

When I attempt to start Cryptographic Service I receive the following errors:

// First
When a start was attempted form the Control panel/ Administrative Tools/
Services
Could not start the Cryptographic Services service on Local Computer.
Error 193:0xc1

I have checked permissions and all appears to be as it should be

//Next step
When a stop and re-start was attempted from the cmd prompt with the
following commands:
C:\net stop cryptsvc
"The service could not be controlled in its present state."

C:\net start cryptsvc
"The Cryptographic Services servce is starting"
and after a breif pause
"The Cryptographic Services servce could not be started."
A system error has occured.

*** is not a valid Win32 application.

I have visited a few websites that address this error but none with a
solution that works so far.
I even tried a registry cleanup tool to no avail. I am at the point that I
believe it may be necessary to re-install Windows XP

Argle. OK - I'd try to run a System File Check (sfc /scannow). You'll need
your XP CD. Google for more iinfo.

And your google search didn't help? I just did one -

http://www.google.com/search?q=Could...L_enUS249US249

Which found a lot.

I'm sorry, but I really have no other suggestions.

I followed the links to that same site and even installed Regcure and ran it
with no posative result. I am at my wits end so I will try a re-install of
Windows and see what happens then.
