OT Anybody else live in what sounds like a war zone on New Year's Eve?
Lived here in this border town most of my life. Wasn't like this when I was
a kid. Nonstop fireworks in a residential area for at least one solid hour just before and after midnight on New Year's Eve. Not just little fireworks either. |

This was much the same, here on the Isle of Wight, all evening until well past midnight! It is of course up to people what they choose to spend their cash on but it did not sound like "we are all in this together" and short of money! My spending on fireworks was nil. Mick. |

Same here, not bought fireworks since the sprogs grew out of them 30 years ago. I did watch the over the top London fireworks on the Beeb, anyone would think it was the millennium all over again not a normal new year. Per John Doe:
Lived here in this border town most of my life. Wasn't like this when I was a kid. Nonstop fireworks in a residential area for at least one solid hour just before and after midnight on New Year's Eve. Not just little fireworks either. Next year, spend New Years Eve back in the hills overlooking Waikiki, Hawaii. Now *that* looks like a war zone.... -) -- Pete Cresswell |

Fireworks that either explode or are self propelled are illegal by state and local law here, but the law enforcement agencies will not enforce these laws UNLESS there is some resultant damage... and by "damage" they evade the legal definition (like "criminal and/or tortious interference with real property") and a window has to be broken, or a automobile finish has to exhibit a degree of damage that won't simply wash off... These cheap little explosive devices are ridiculous and dangerous... the type of moron that engages in this street-level mayhem IS NOT your normal ordinary responsible property owner; rather, they tend to be drunks and drug addicts which twice-a-year go on these binges with illegal fireworks (they can't pay their bill and they don't own anything and their credit sucks - so it's not feasible to pursue them in a civil court...) and every year thousands of little kids get fingers blown up, little eyeballs get damaged, hearing impaired by broken eardrums, etc... and WHO DO YOU THINK PAYS THE PURSUANT MEDICAL BILLS??? They and their parents sure as Hell don't have any medical insurance... It's an unregulated industry as far as the manufacturing goes... They are illegal in most states. There's even a federal law with stiff penalties for transporting these instrumentalities over state lines... http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/18/I/39/836 Compare these relatively chinchy - yet expensive - explosive devices to the normally large pyrotechnic shows put-on by most municipalities all across the USA... They're professional, huge in scope, adequate medical and other services are readily available, usually appropriate for the entire family, a community social event, generate business for vendors - thus a taxable revenue stream for the jurisdiction... etc... vis-a-vis these morons who spend their rent-checks and child-support payments on cheap Chinese explosives, get drunk and drugged-up and who are not "having fun" until they're running around shooting these things at people's houses, windows, pets and landscapes... all hours of the day and night, for weeks at a time with relative impunity unless something happens to burn down. Around here they start out about a week before the holidays (4th of July and New Year's Day) and sometimes go for weeks afterwards. It starts out sporadic, cresendos at the holiday, and then peters-out sporadically. Sometimes they drive by my parents' neighborhood in pickup trucks shooting the rockets at everybody's houses - and the cops say they can't do anything, even though there are specific laws - both state and local - that say otherwise. ??? WTF?!? My best guess is that somewhere in our decadent moronized society "the right to shoot fireworks" has somehow been informally inculcated into our precious 2nd Amendment rights -- because they both make loud noises and potentially cause damages, I suppose? This tangetizes into a generally stupid law enforcement structure which has evolved all across the USA... I'm relieved to see it's the same crazy in other parts of the country! I wish our "public servant" representatives would look into whether these vendors of the these "products" - which tend to be fly-by-night tent operations set up in parking lots - are ACTUALLY paying their sales taxes... then COMPARE the revenue streams to the amount of welfare medical care caused to these idiots' kids - who are being trained and prepared for yet another generation of this nonesense activity. Went to bed at 10:50 pm. Slept through the whole pointless affair. Modern New Years never made much sense to me anyway, even as a child, that the year should debut about 10 days after the start of Winter. Better it be on the Vernal Equinox. And yes, I've read the explanations of why it is when it is, but they seem more like rationalizations than reasons. The one that makes the most sense, at least for western culture, is it comes from the feast of the Roman god Janus, the god of doorways and beginnings, which was held in January that by the way was named after him. I don't guess you're in Dubai where the hotel was burning down and they didn't let such a matter interrupt the planned fireworks festivities, are you? I think that was a 63-story firework... http://i.cbc.ca/1.3386022.1451586107...dubai-fire.jpg ( http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/dubai-t...2016-1.3386725 ) It'll be interesting after the investigation, to find out what they're using for cladding on those buildings. ******* And you might be thinking "well, our building codes are bullet-proof". Think again. We're allowed to build six storey buildings out of all-wood now. One of these construction sites has already burned to the ground. There is no monopoly on stupid when it comes to building codes. Buildings like this are only "safe" when the cladding is on all surfaces. During the twelve month construction time, it's a tinder-box ready to burn. Once a site like this catches fire, all the firefighters can do is stand back and watch. Stand way back... The heat is so intense, it can melt the facade on other buildings. http://www.lfpress.com/2014/09/26/bu...ighters-not-so So if you're shopping for a condo now, better ask what it's made out of. I definitely want the unit on the sixth floor. It's got a great view. http://globalnews.ca/news/1872977/ca...ilding-policy/ Paul |

At the rate that apt complexes burn to the ground here (about one per week) a 6 story complex would be an awful firetrap. Maybe they won't come here due to hurricane codes. |
