Sound problem with Messenger 6.1

I have been using Messenger 5.0 with webcam connections very satisfactorily. However, when I and my contacts have both upgraded to Messenger 6.1, we are unable to make the sound work. The pictures both ways are very clear , but just no audio communicatio
n. Can anyone kindly tell us how we may rectify this problem? Thank you.
