xp, sp2, norton
Hello sharpie, Congrags. on fixing your issue. Peter is right about your not needing Windows firewall with Norton. As a matter of fact Norton must likely turned off Windows firewall when you installed it. As far as having a firewall in your cable modem if all you have is the standard modem like Motorola you will not find much of a firewall there. You might want to find a Belkin or Linisky Broadband router to run with your modem. Now, for the adware that is not a necessarly a virus. It is something you have recieved most likely via an e-mail this is why Norton missed it. Don't be to quick to fault your software programs. The scum behind these adware and virus programs are getting better at hiding their code all the time. It does not sound like you are a careless user and adware can happen to most anyone. A good thing to go by is your gut. If an e-mail seems wrong or out of place don't open it. Verfiy the source first. Also, if you download music files from a P2P site you could have gotton it there. The important thing is that you kept your cool and resolved your issue without damageing your system. Best of luck to all. Ron J eter" wrote: I'm glad you sorted it out. It's wise to use only 1 software firewall, so if you have Norton then Windows FW should be off, you can always turn it back on should you have any problems with Norton. I use McAfee which in fact turns off WE automatically. You can, however, use a hardware and software firewall together. One example of a hardware FW would be a router firewall. I would assume, but could be wrong, that your modem firewall is classified as a hardware FW. Here's an article about them. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=60 -- Peter. Thanks to all of you for your help and for some very interesting responses, as well as for some interesting reading. I was finally able to get a phone # for Symantec and talked with tech support. I had a virus (adware). In fact two areas were involved, one in windows and the other in program files. Both were adware. I still can't believe I conctracted a virus as I keep everything updated (virus protection) and run ad aware and spy bot on a regular basis. I've rid my system of the virus and am still curious if any of you would have any idea how a virus ended up on my computer since I have this protection. Also, I've turned off my windows updates and believe that's best for me as I've read other articles stating the problems with lots of software once you downloaded sp2 and the updates. Is it necessary to turn off the windows xp firewall since there is one included in Norton and since I have a cable modem through Comcast and there's a firwall there? I'm wondering if it's overkill and/or could leaving it on reate a conflict? I'm definitely ready to go back to a Mac now !!!! "Peter" wrote: Agreed. I'll let you get on with it and butt out. Good luck. -- Peter. Toronto, Canada. XP Home SP2. P4 @ 3.0ghz, 160gb HDD, 1.0gb DDR. "Ron J" wrote in message ... Ok Peter, I know you are only trying to help. But when you tell a guy to forget Norton and use Symantec when they are the same you are only adding to his problems. You can't slam a product without personal experince with it. Norton is the most used product in this group and to slam it witout facts just becuase a friend told you it sucks is not trouble shooting. First we have to find out why his anti-virus can't connect to the Internet. If you read his post you will see where he also used McAvee. Telling him to do a complete reinstall is premature at this point. It may be as simple as removing some spy-ware. The programs are working fine so far. If it seems a virus has taken effect then Trend Micro's free "House Call" can be used to find it and remove it. Reinstalling is always an out but it should be the last out. You always run the risk of there being a boot vurus with a problem like this. If it is not removed XP will stop loading during the install and then where will the user be? A new install has the risk of the SP2 reinstall going wrong, ie, you don't change an engine in a car untill you make sure it is not just a starter problem. Best of luck to you. Ron J "Peter" wrote: Yes ...what I am trying to say is that Norton/Symantec seemed to be a little tardy getting up to scratch with SP2 and often it meant hunting around their website for the fix. Or so I'm told. But this guy can't get there anyway if I understand it correctly. It seems to me that a complete format/reinstallation of XP seems in order, then apply a good firewall and the virus protection. The only Norton/Symantec product I use is Partition Magic 8 -- Peter. "Peter" wrote: Sorry, I guess I was a little blunt. I've had so many friends finding problems with Norton since SP2, but usually an update from their site helped. -- Peter. Toronto, Canada. We use Symantec SAV Corporate Edition V9 on all machines at work. All SP2, no problems. You're entitled to your opinions. But, wouldn't it be a little more diplomatic and professional not to generalize your opinions as facts? Or, is "crummy" a technical term? And, if you would be so kind as to list those "all sorts of problems with SP2" for the advtantage of us poor souls who are still stupid enough to use Symantec products, and who happen to like them?
