USB2 ports run a 1.1 speed
I've recently gotten a new rig - Acer, which purports to have USB2 ports.
However, the speed is at 1.1. XP says that there are no hi-speed ports installed. I have checked out the drivers and they are, indeed, standard usb drivers, not enhanced ones. There is no mobo disk only a system recovery set of disks. I do not want to wipe out my system, if possible Here's what I've done already: Made sure that my Media Center 2005 OS has SP2 installed. Run Windows update several times - all updates are current. Uninstalled all usb hubs, controllers, etc. and rebooted - still 1.1 drivers. (did this several times) Checked that the usbehci.sys file is in system32\drivers folder -- it is, although the current driver is usbhub.sys and I don't know how to change it to usbehci.sys. Gone to the Acer website - they have no USB2 drivers to download. Attempted to contact Acer - they will not respond. Attempted to contact the dealer - they will not respond. Attempted to match the Acer mobo description - FC51GM - to the Foxconn website to see if I can identify the specific mobo. - no luck Attempted to contact Foxconn - they will not respond. Asked on several tech sites with all the above information. They respond with suggestions that I have already tried and told them I tried. Unless I can find an answer here it seems as if my only alternative is to try and RMA the whole rig. I really need some help. And, not to offend anyone, please do not suggest any of the things is the list above that I have already tried. Thank you. |

I see that you have already posted this on the AnandTech forums, got very good advice, and were unable for one reason or another to use the advice, you also seem to have refused to refer this problem to Geeks from where you bought the hardware. What more could you get here in the way of help? |

USB2 ports run a 1.1 speed
If you had actually read the list I of things I tried here you would have
seen that I have contacted Geeks, although I refer to them here as "the dealer" and they have not responded other than to say I could return the rig. I did not "refuse" to contact Geeks. Maybe you should adjust your reading glasses. Yes, I did post this at Anandtech. I tried everything there that was suggested, to no avail. My frustration there was that it appeard that most of the respondents would read the headline and propose an obvious solution, without reading the whole post which showed I had put considerable effort into solving it myself. Sort of like what you just did. One member there was so kind as to say he knew the answer but would not tell me because he wanted me to find it myself. The impression I got was that because I could not find the answer myself - please reread the list of things I HAVE attempted - I was somehow lazy and not worthy of help. I would actually not like to return the rig because of the time involved in preparing it ship back - backup, reformatting etc, - and the time to set up everything all over again. The rig performs very well. If I have broken some sort of unwritten code by asking a question that I don't already know the answer to or haven't been able to find after strenuous effort, please let me know and I will refrain from participating in the secret religion. You ask what more in the way of help I would want here, and the answer is simplicity itself: a solution. Perhaps there is some MS thing I don't know about that MS fans do. I have exhausted my knowledge and the advice I have received so far has not worked. And I did try it ALL. Is this a crime that I now ask for a deeper level of advice? I notice you have not made any helpful suggestions whatever, only criticism of me that previous advice should have solved my problem and that because it didn't I am somehow morally defective. Thanks, Robert Gault, for your help and compassion. Neige "Robert Gault" wrote: Neige wrote: I've recently gotten a new rig - Acer, which purports to have USB2 ports. Check the BIOS to be sure USB 2.0 is enabled.

USB2 ports run a 1.1 speed
Thanks, Jim. I should have put that into my the list that I have tried.
There are three settings in my BIOS for USB activation: Disabled, 1.1, and 2.0/1.1; it is set on 2.0/1.1 "Jim Macklin" wrote: Check the BIOS to be sure USB 2.0 is enabled. |

USB2 ports run a 1.1 speed
Thanks, Jim. There was an old HP photoprinter installed on one of the USB2
ports. All the other 3.0 ports, though, still do 1.1. I uninstalled the HP, then I uninstalled all the USB ports and restarted. Windows (I do have SP2 installed) reinstalled USB drivers, but they still were the generic 1.1, not the enhanced version. For some reason Windows will not install the enhanced hi-speed drivers into my system. They are there. Windows update says everything is up to date - and it is probably true that the files are on my C: drive, but Windows won't attach them to my hi-speed ports. This is so frustrating! Thanks for the suggestion, though. "Jim Macklin" wrote: What device do you have connected, if there is a 1.1 device on the port, 1.1 is what you'll get. "Neige" wrote in message ... | Thanks, Jim. USB2 ports run a 1.1 speed
Thanks, Antioch, I gave it a try and had the site scan my system. When the
scan came back it said there were a couple of drivers, video and audio, that needed updating, but it said my USB drivers were all up to date. It did, however, show them as Generic USB drivers, not enhanced. As I've checked over and over, MS says that if I have SP1 or SP2 installed, I am fine and enhanced drivers are on my drive and will be installed. However, somehow they don't get installed by Windows, even after I uninstall the Generic USB controller, restart, and let Windows do its thing. I simply don't know what else to do. MS says I have done everything correctly and yet it won't install or work properly. Thanks for your referral and time! I seem to remember that there were two or more different
chipset makers for USB 2.0, some don't quit met the specification. You might try a program such as Sandra, Everest or Bel Arc to see what chips set you have. Then get drivers written for that chipset. "Neige" wrote in message ... | Thanks, Jim. There was an old HP photoprinter installed on one of the USB2 | ports. For what it is worth, Google shows several messages linking the Acer
FC51GM to the Foxconn 6100K8MA-RS. The board uses an nForce chipset. Drivers can be had at http://www.foxconnchannel.com/servic...D=en-us0000004 |

Thanks, Robert. I appreciate the time you took to make the connection
between the two mobos. I downloaded and installed all the drivers. Then I attached my USB2 external drive. The message popped up that it "would perform faster if it were attached to a hi-speed port. Click here for a list of ports." I clicked and it showed the 8 port USB hub but said "there are no hi-speed ports" on this machine. According to one MS KB article the enhanced USB driver is usbechi.sys located in the Windows/system32/drivers directory. I have that file in that directory. Somehow only the generic driver, usbhub.sys, gets installed. I tried uninstalling the driver for the USB controller and updating the driver, but Windows only seems to allow *.inf files to be selected to do that. I can't attach the usbechi.sys file myself to be the driver, or at least my knowledge fails me at that point. I guess that means it's a Windows thing, but the KB articles I've managed to find all say that simply installing SP1 or SP2 will solve the problem. And as I've noted, I have SP2 installed and Windows update says everything is just peachy on my system. I guess the only way forward now is to pay for MS support and hope they know what they're talking about. Thanks for your effort! Make sure remove all references to anything USB that includes the host controllers and then let
Windows reinstall them after a reboot. Its the actual host controller that will specify whether its USB2 or not. -- Dave Vair CNE, CNA, MCP, A+, N+ "Neige" wrote in message ... Thanks, Jim. If that's the case then I should probably take Geeks up on their offer to RMA
the rig. That's depressing; I've got so many hours into this already. Thanks for sticking around on the thread, Jim. "Jim Macklin" wrote: I'd say your problem is hardware, more than software. |
