Default Troubleshooting a USB issue question please

I've been troubleshooting an issue that developed soon after I switched my
mouse and keyboard from both being SP/2 port supported to a new USB mouse
and keyboard combo.
What has been happening is an intermittent problem that I've tried different
approaches to solve. The long and short of it is that SOMETIMES but not
always, after the system has been put in standby with the USB mouse and
keyboard attached, it won't come out of standby; no mouse, no keyboard; no
monitor.
I've done serious research on google and have posted here prior to this
post. I want to check with you to see if I might be on the right track with
this.
Right now I have the PS/2 mouse and keyboard attached and have had 0 issues
coming out of standby, so I'm pretty sure it was a USB issue.
Anyway, I'd like to solve the puzzle in case I want to go USB again
sometime.

What I think has happened is that XP is shutting down the USB hubs for the
mouse and keyboard when attached.
You may assume I'm running a clean system/SP2/all updates
OS/BIOS/CHIPSET/HARDWARE. Does it sound logical that going into Device
Manager/selecting the root hubs for the USB mouse and keyboard when attached
and unchecking "allow windows to shut down the hub to save power" might be
the answer I've been seeking?
Many thanks

If you run an intel based brd, download and install the chipset installation
utility.Once installed, open device mgr,R.click the keyboard and mouse
hardware one at a time,select uninstall,once thru,shutdown computer,dont
restart.Plug in usb hardware,start pc,in xp,install software/drivers for
both.Also,
use diffrent ports this time.

Thank you for the reply. Yes. it's an Intel based board; an Asus P4C800-E
Deluxe for a Pen 4.
Do I get the chipset installation utility from Intel's site or from the Asus
site?
