Default Anyone else get a periodic red screen of death?

For years, on multiple Windows operating system versions, I get this red
screen of death on my old computer every once in a while (every few weeks).
http://i.cubeupload.com/3YL1B2.jpg

It's the only display that works, so, I can't tell if it's the display or
if it's the graphics card, and it's not worrisome in the least except that
I lose whatever unsaved data I was working with since the only recourse is
to reboot.

I'm not asking how to fix it since it's not really a big deal because a
reboot 100% of the time comes back normally (so it is something that "just
happens" and then goes away upon reboot every single time).

This has been happening for years, and it's not a big deal.
I'm just curious, really, if you've seen this red screen of death before.

I have not had a solid red screen but i have had solid black (PC would
boot OK but fail after a couple of minutes). In that case, the PC was
still running and could be accessed remotely (SAMBA, Telnet, VNC,
etc...). It was just the display that failed.

Also, could the red be your monitor's response to lack of video? Most
I've seen show blue but yours may be different. Does the same thing
happen with another monitor?

The red screen of death is almost always associated with a graphics
driver problem.

Try and update your graphics driver.

LCD monitors have "test mode". But it alternates the colors
of the screen, as a means to allow staff to detect stuck pixels.

The next time it happens, move the monitor cable to a second
computer, and see if the second computer can produce a
legible signal on it. To determine if the original computer
outputs "red", or the monitor itself is stuck on the red
screen of the test sequence.

And try powering off you monitor, unplugging it for 1 minute,
and powering it back on again

Every once in a while someone knocks the VGA cable out of the laptop (which
has a dead screen) and what happens while the cable is ajar is a yellowish
hue to everything, until I put the cable back into the VGA port.

But not red.

Thank you for that advice to update the graphics driver, although I'm not
sure what that means, in practice, since the computer has a display driver
(the laptop display itself is kaput) and the monitor itself is a NEC 15
inch basic VGA monitor.

When I right clicked on My Computer and pressed "Manage", and then when I
looked at the graphics driver, I was surprised that there were five
duplicate graphics drivers, where I am the only one using this computer and
I don't look at this in years so I can't explain where they came from.
http://i.cubeupload.com/tozOYs.jpg

I deleted all of them, and am posting this before I reboot.

I also noticed that the graphics card seems to be "disabled".
http://i.cubeupload.com/mDbuC0.gif

I don't remember disabling it myself (and I am the only use of the PC).

I only have two computers, where the second is in another room and is a
desktop, so, it might be hard to move the cable to a second computer
without powering down the monitor.

If I power down the monitor, it would be easy to move to a second computer,
but I think the trick will be moving the monitor without powering it down
first.

Thanks for that advice as I hadn't thought of powering down the monitor,
although, as I recall, I have pulled out & put back the VGA display cable
from the computer and that didn't change anything.

But I don't think I ever powered the monitor down, so I will try that the
next time it happens (where it happens roughly once a week or two weeks or
so).

Nothing wrong with that, it'll put one back. But it's not the monitor
stuff you need to be concerned about, but rather the display driver (so
in Device Manager, Display Adapters (not Monitors)).

Hi Haruto,

Powering off the monitor forces its sync circuitry to reset.
Unplugging the data (video) cable won't force a reset.

If it works, there are two issues at play.

1) your video card could be going out, or

2) your monitor could be going out

The only real way to tell for sure is to swap
another monitor onto your system.

But, I will say, that it is typically the monitor.

I sell monitors to my customers. The brand I
have settled on is NEC. They have a very sharp
picture, even their cheap models. And the best part:
I do not even know their tech support phone number
or where to even find it (the web I suppose). They
are that reliable.

I use to sell Viewsonic. I DEFINITELY knew
their phone number.

And, dport, VDI port, hdmi ports will give you about
a 10 to 20% sharper picture over the old VGA port.

Power everything down. Swap the two monitors. Run
them for a while. See if the problem moves or stays.

Thank you for pointing me to the display driver.
Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family

http://i.cubeupload.com/hqrdYI.jpg

It seems to be installed twice, but to the same version:
Device Provider: Intel Corporation
Driver Date: 10/14/2005
Driver Version: 6.14.10.4410
Driver Signatu Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher

When I click on "Driver Details" I get more than a score of dll, exe, lrc,
cpa, vp, and sys files in a list.

But when I try to update it, it just says there is no newer driver to be
found.

My mistake. You are correct!

Red envelopes are gifts presented at social and
