Default Obituary: WinFS dies; parts may be used for transplant

WinFS, a once-promised central part of Windows Vista that never progressed much
beyond the vaporware stage, very recently had its life support disconnected by
Microsoft and was allowed to die. There is general talk about transplanting
some of its parts into SQL Server, but the WinFS coffin will remain open for a
time in case those parts aren't used and need to be buried as well.

Microsoft has announced that services and burial will be private.

"...the next version of SQL Server, code-named Katmai, will incorporate
features from WinFS to store unstructured data and automate administration."
