Default Wave sounds get muted without my doing anything

Wave sounds get muted without my doing anything

This problem is currently happening in XP-SP3, but iirc I've had it in
10 too. (I'm out of town so I can't check, plus it's not predictable
anyhow.)

For no apparent reason, I have no more sound, and after checking the
volume setting and its mute box, and if the system knows about the USB
speakers, and if the USB speakers are assigned to RadioMaximus or
Skype, and looking everywhere, I bring up the mixer** and find that
there is a check mark in the Mute box of the Wave section of the set
of volume controls.

How does the check mark get there? How can I stop this from
happening?

**(which is labeled Speaker in the left end of the Title bar. I get
it by right clicking on the Speaker icon in the systray and choosing
Open Volume Control)

Actually it is predictable if it does not happen in 10. Then we
can predict it will not happen in 10.

You need to describe it from Windows 10, using the correct
terminology.
