emoticons on im window

hi, im new to this and learning! slow but sure!i want to
know how to get to the messenger conversation window,where
im told , i will find the emoticons button and click on to
it and store a group of emoticons to use in my email and
in my messenger conversations window .could you tell me
the steps that will get me there? i thank you and hope you
