Naw... just let the third party developers compete for the best
newsreader for Windows. As anything that Microsoft could develop
today as a newsreader just wouldn't be any good anyway. So why
bother?

There will be no competition. Nobody is developing new nntp readers,
especially for Windows. The venue is fading away.

Please do not indulge the troll's habit of crossposting messages to
unrelated newsgroups.

Admittedly, Usenet in general is dying off. It's still an excellent way
to download pirated material in relative secrecy (if your Usenet
provider supports SSL) and at top speed but for discussions, it's dying
and the ISPs are trying to guarantee that. My Internet provider does not
include post-enabled Usenet access just to give you an idea and it's the
largest ISP in the whole country.

USENET servers are a "cost center" for the ISP. So they don't really
want to offer any service, that costs money to police. A similar
thing happened at work - we had a server with posting capability,
within the company, but it cost "one IT guy" to run it. So it
was shut down.

Well, I believe that's what happened here. Sure Usenet isn't in high
demand by customers because customers don't even know it exists. Any
looking for a discussion will go to specialty web sites offering forums
on a specific topic like BigSoccer for soccer-related chat or the Ubuntu
forums for discussion of anything related to that operating system.
However, Usenet is the quickest way of discussing with people and it is
a shame that it's dying off the way it is.

Neglecting its customers in search of more monopoly power is
something another antitrust trial would fix in a big hurry.

Nothing with respect to deprecating 13 year old XP or returning those
features (color, gradient, customizing fonts) remotely meets an
antitrust concern.

In fact the last antitrust agreement was a farce.
- Supreme Ct. refused to hear the case after the plaintiffs attempted to
send MSFT's appeal [to the original 'in violation of code of conduct'
judge's 'findings'] to the Supreme Ct.
- Supreme Ct. sent it back to the federal Appellate Court. Appellate Ct
overturned the findings
- Eventually the DOJ and MSFT primarily agreed on two issues and
unanimously approved by the Appellate Court.
a. API's would be made available to 3rd party developers for 5 yrs
(that ended in 2006)
b. no code changes, no unbundling of IE

If you really think another antitrust trial is going to return the
deprecated (and soon to be completely unsupported) XP operating system
feature(s) three o/s later (Vista, W7, W8)and over 15 years later (the
DOJ vs. MSFT began in 1998) then you might consider seeking and audience
better suited (than this forum) for help with pipe dreams

Fyi...cross posting removed
