That is, I won't have a copy of the MS Office client software installed on my computer. Did I misinterpret the information on the MS Office 2013 envelopes at the store? Here are the Office versions available. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...oryID.62684700 Which box did you read ? 365 is subscription based, Office 2013 is not. - Some 365 plans come with locally installed Office applications. - All Office 2013 version install Office locally on your machine. - W I guess I must have been reading the wrong box. I'll go back tomorrow and have another look. I would really like to find a box copy that would let me choose which components it contains. I don't need anything other than Word, Excel and Outlook, but all the available boxes include One Note, Access and Publisher. I wish I could do a pick and choose, but I see no way to do this. Gordon I really messed things up, yesterday. I went to Staples and bought one of the envelope things with MS Office Home & Business 3013 printed on the face of it. Inside there was a small card with a Product Key on it. I followed the directions inside this little envelope and tried to do a download & install of MS. Office Home and Business 2013. When I finished, no changes had been made on my computer other than some of my existing programs had been modified a bit, yet were still the same 2010 version. For example, my Microsoft Outlook is now a (Trial) version. Then I noticed that all the download and install had been done on the Microsoft Sky Drive. I can access all the programs in this Home Business setup and use them on Sky Drive, but I cannot get them installed onto my own computer. What can I try, next? Gordon Office 2013 doesn't install Office applications to SkyDrive. I guess I really got my installation messed up some way. I can go onto SkyDrive and use any of my Office 2013 apps but I cannot find a trace of them on my desktop computer. qp When you install Office 2013 suites or programs, the Setup program uses the Program Files\Microsoft Office folder as the default folder on a 32-bit version of Windows, or the Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office folder as the default folder on a 64-bit version of Windows. The Office Bin default folder in these versions of windows are Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 and Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15 respectively. The Office Bin folder is the folder in which the Office executable files are installed. Winston, I checked this out and the folders you mention are in place except I can't find anything named Office Bin. Is this short for Binary? Also I notice that the MS Office software shown in any of these folders is all of the Office 2010 set. That is, I found NOTHING that even mentioned MS Office 2013 in any of these folders. Outlook 2013 cannot coexist with any earlier version of Outlook. When you install Outlook 2013, the Setup program removes any earlier versions of Outlook that are installed. /qp Maybe I need to uninstall all my MS Office 2010 files before trying to do a download and install of MS Office 2013. Also see http://support.microsoft.com/find-so...e/office-2013/ Links for each of the following are available - Activating - Downloading - Finding the product key - Installing the Software - Obtaining physical media I have gone through the process of keying in my 25 digit Product Key in the spaces provided and have then had no problems with the download process until it reaches the end of the "Streaming" process and asks me to sign in. Then I get a movie that tells me some of the nice features of Office 2013 but when I finish that it's the end of the rope, so to speak. Everything goes bonkers and there is nothing to let me sign in or activate my MS Office 2013 programs. There are no icons in the Office 14 or 15 folders that seem to pertain to my recent downloads. The icons I find there all pertain to the earlier 2011 version of MS Office. Gordon If you saw the error ' Something went wrong'...then it usually indicates a second installation of Office was started before the first install. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2827031/en-us Okay, one more thing...I went to the Control Panel Programs Programs and Features then clicked on Change. I got a popup that listed all my installed programs. I then selected Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013 en-us then clicked on Change at the top of this list. It seemed to be going through some kind of extensive searching and cleaning up. When it was finished it did another of those download slipstream processes but, an hour and a half later, when it was finished, I still couldn't find anything that indicated that I had MS Office 2013 installed. That is, the Program Files (x86) \Microsoft Office\Office 15 folder didn't have anything in it that seemed to tie in with Office 2013. There were only four files in this folder and all were dated 10/15/2013: OSPP OSPP OSPPREARM SLERROR Gordon |

Maybe my problems with MS Office 2013 hiding in the shadows on my new HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1 is that I have this computer set up to run in 64 bit mode while MS Office 2013 prefers the (MUCH ADVANCED) 32 bit mode??? When I try to go back through the download/install process it seems to get started with the job then I get a pop-up screen that says, "Something went wrong. Office can't do that right now because your product is busy with another task. Please wait for this task to complete and try again. Go online for more help." So, I shut all my other client software down and left the computer overnight, hoping it would finish this other task, but this morning I got the same popup and nothing could be found that would clear the "other task" out of the way. Gordon "product is busy with another task" Something locking an important file ? Your AV software may be scanning files, at the same time the installer is running. Disable the AV before the Office Installer starts. The Indexer can be paused, if you can find the control panel for it. The Indexer could be attempting to index the freshly installed files. I would not have thought it would use file locking, but you never know. That's about the only things that comes to mind. You could do control-alt-delete and use the Task Manager, examine the processes in there, and see if that jogs your memory in terms of programs that "shadow" other activities, and throw file locks on things. ******* Your symptoms will be common enough, that plenty of others will experience them :-) http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...a-5765c69e1f9f The canned response at the top, is kinda like mine. Only it does add "Microsoft Office Service" to the picture, whatever that is. This isn't the same product you're trying to install, but it does have some suggestions you can work on. http://community.spiceworks.com/topi...ing-went-wrong They mention this KB, but I see no reason why this should be required. I wonder if this removes anything else, while it is at it ? "Uninstall Microsoft Office 2013 or Office 365" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501 Hmmm. In that KB, they mention "Manual steps to remove Microsoft Office 2013 MSI installations" That means, somewhere out there, there is an MSI version of the damn product :-) I'm warming up my downloader... Damn. Only one product comes that way. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...76575f1?page=1 Paul |

Gordon Office 2013 doesn't install Office applications to SkyDrive. Winston, It seems to have done so in my situation. SkyDive is the only place I can open and use any of my Office 2013 client software. This morning I did a program removal (from my desktop computer, not from SkyDrive) for everything I could find that pertains to Office Home & Business 2013. Then I did a re-boot and checked my computer's general performance. It seemed to be working very well. Windows 8.1 and all my other client software seem to have no problems. In fact I'm using Forte Agent 7.20/32.1218 on this computer to post this message. It works as it always has. That is, the computer is not messed up...just Office Home & Business 2013 is messed up??? Then I did another Office Home & Business 2013 download and install, using the 25 character Product Key. All seemed to go very well. The download seemed to go to completion then a window popped up with all that "Introduction" information. All was working well so far but I still cannot find any means for opening any of my Office Home & Business software other than to go to a SkyDrive site and open them there. What gives??? Gordon The instructions on my Office Home & Business envelope, inside the top cover are; 1. Scratch off label on the card below to locate your 25 character Product Key.* 2. Go to www.office.com/setup 3. Enter your 25-character Product Key and follow the on-screen instructions. 4. Sign in with or create your Microsoft account. 5. Download Office to your PC. I very carefully worked my way through all of these steps except 5. I couldn't find any way to do this. All else seemed to be going well but I still can't find any way to use any of the Office Home & Business 2013 programs except to go to a Microsoft Account and do it there. I hope the marketing people are reading the comments from the users in that thread, at their peril. Click-To-Run is not making any friends. From what I can see having read a few complaints Click to Run is another confusing box of nails. I've not really followed those issues. With respect to 8.1 I'm basically a clean install person for my main systems which currently run fine for Win7Sp1 and Win8.1 (both Pro and x64). I had some free time earlier today and plugged in a 6 month old 500GB drive with Win8 Pro with Media Center on my i3 laptop. Booted it up, updated Windows (a bunch) and the other software (Java-JRE, IE10, Adobe Reader, SeaMonkey) - also installed were iTunes and WLM). Ran the 8.1 Upgrade Advisor and no issues save a messages to de-authorize iTunes. Booted from a usb that was created from a full retail 8.1 MSDN iso with the intent to verify what happens when choosing the Upgrade option when using bootable media. As expected I got the message that you can't upgrade to Windows 8.1 using this media (i.e. run setup.exe from within Windows 8). Repeated with the full retail DVD (made from the same iso) same results. Booted to Windows 8 Pro with MC, inserted usb and ran the 8.1 setup.exe but entered a recently purchased retail (non MSDN) Win 8.1 upgrade key. Let it run, checking periodically while doing a few other non-pc things. Once 8.1 was finished and setup (I used my MSFT account g) I noticed that MC was removed. Added MC using one of my previous provided Win8 MC keys and subsequently Windows 8.1 showed up as not activated. Had to use the phone option...after some back and forth discussion they (she, Patty who didn't at all sound like a Patty)finally gave me a new MC key which then reactivated as 8.1 Pro with Media Center. Not sure if the same de-activation would have occurred if I used an unused 8.0 acquired MC key. I suspect if I ran the upgrade from the Store, or used the saved iso/create DVD from the Store purchase none of the above would have been necessary. -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

Gordon Yes ! :-) A full backup, captures every file on C: (and SYSTEM RESERVED if one is present). The option built into Windows is called System Image. Windows 7 made that feature quite visible. If you have an OEM OS (Windows 7 on HP or Acer or Dell laptop), the proprietary backup software they might also include on the computer, tends to "bust" the control panel for System Image. Still, you can try to raise it from the dead, with commands like this. sdclt /configure sdclt /configure /target Windows 8 kinda hides System Image. Windows 8.1 makes it a little more difficult to find, although I did see an article the other day, claiming you could still get to it. There is an underlying command that does the backup. And this particular set of commands, is for those people who won't put up with Microsoft trying to hide the functions. This is the "better than nothing" way of getting your System Image stored onto an external USB drive. You can use your System Recovery CD (which the laptop should have prompted you to burn), to do the restore. The restore won't be hidden as badly as the backup portion is. This command is a bit intimidating, and there's really no reason to be using this one. The backup is going to partition F: (which happens to be stored on our external USB drive). There are two source partitions being backed up. One is C: and the other is all that volume crap. This particular syntax is used for backing up partitions which don't have drive letters. Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:F: -include:\\?\Volume{C38A95FE-9261-11E1-92E9-806E6F6E6963}\,C: -quiet This is closer to what you'll be using. AllCritical is a shorthand for "back up my boot and system partitions". If you have two partitions or one partition, which is key to making the computer work (the OS), then this command captures it. This saves your Registry, as well as all the other gigabytes of system files. They will be stored on F: for later recovery. wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:F: -allCritical If I do it this way, I can capture more named partitions, perhaps my three data partitions. You won't be endangering your data partitions when removing the old copy of Office. But this shows, you can back up more partitions if you want to. Here, I'm backing up C:,D:,F: and SYSTEM RESERVED partitions, a total of four of them. The specification overlaps a bit, which isn't a problem. Output goes to a named folder on the N: partition (another USB drive). wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:N: -include:C:,D:,F: -allCritical -quiet If you need to recovery (experiment goes badly), you need to boot either an official installer DVD (you don't have one), or you can boot the 200MB Recovery CD (you should have burned one). The one you want is "System Image recovery". http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ndows-8-a.html When you make the CD (or DVD) with the 200MB of files on it, you can boot it, and confirm you can get here. The rest of the article discusses other things you might not be interested in. http://www.eightforums.com/attachmen...ed_options.jpg If your recovery CD is working and showing OK, you can now go back to booting your regular way, and attempt the backup. This tutorial doesn't mention the wbAdmin method, which you can test and see if it works. You'll need a partition big enough to store the amount of files on your C:. You need to know the drive letter of the backup partition, to test whether the backup to that partition is going to work. You would type "cmd" in the startup interface (the one that searches for programs), when it finds "cmd", you right-click the "cmd" and select "Run As Administrator". From the MSDOS window, you can run this command, and it'll get your C: backed up. And safe against any Registry mishap while removing Office 2010. wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:F: -allCritical If you can find a recipe where the "Create a System Image" option still exists, then all the better. I saw mention there was a way, but I didn't write it down. And I have to dash right now, so can't search for it. ******* You can also use Macrium Reflect Free to do backups, but that's another long chapter. There is a download button in the lower left for this tool. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx L8R, Paul |
