Need help to purchase GPS device
Hello, I'm wondering if should I buy a GPS device to go on visit tour to
Europe. Do you know which is the best or second best (not too expensive) with maps updated for street and highways? I mean all Europe maps except Russia and Turkey. Thanks |

We looked at buying the Oceanic Maps to install on the satnav whilst still in the UK, but they were more expensive than waiting until she got to New Zealand then buying a complete new satnav(1) with the maps installed. Thanks Terminology -just to assist with any searches and queries: If you are talking about driving you are looking for a "SatNav" system, either standalone or on a Smartphone. "GPS" tends to be used for off-road mapping and navigation. Worth considering the option of buying the best and then selling it one after the trip if this is a one-off requirement. |

Do you mainly need it to give you turn-by-turn navigation instructions to get from Point A to Point B? Or do you mainly need it to record where you have been and to plot this on a map? You may find that a mobile phone with a GPS adaptor, with suitable software, will do both of these jobs. Certainly in the UK, software such as Here Maps does the first job and Viewranger (with maps that must be purchased) does the second: I use both of these packages extensively. Whether either/both of these packages have maps for the rest of Europe is something you'll need to investigate. |

In message , Nil
writes Is is in any way related to Windows 8 or Microsoft Windows of any kind? It might be. This has reminded me that I haven't tried my usb gps dongle with either W8.1 or W10. I've always given up on Google maps both on Android and Windows, but haven't really tried too hard. My oldish X series Lenovo tablet laptop convertibles have inbuilt gps if you stick a sim card in, but, again, I've not yet got this to work. OT: In general for marine navigation it seems as though in Europe you have to purchase electronic charts whereas it appears they are free in the US. All this is stuff I was interested in and never followed up. Thanks again to the OP for reminding me. -- Bill |

It's really too bad UseNet doesn't have the capability of preventing
trolls like these from seeing your posts. YouTube has implemented such a system, it works wonderfully. And if Google can think of it, you would think that UseNet could have it. It's a great way to weed out the trolls. If the troll doesn't like what it sees, it doesn't see it anymore! For that reason alone, for general discussion YouTube has displaced UseNet for me. I would consider using Google Groups if it did the same. But the last time I checked, just finding an appropriate group was a difficult task. Reminiscent of when Google first took over UseNet and the search results no longer included the most pertinent groups list. And here's the other most persistent troll from the homebuilt PC group... -- Char Jackson none none.invalid wrote in news:9hm1lati4vnkb9udrvgmmb8m2ccga1ff5n 4ax.com: Path: eternal-september.org!mx02.eternal-september.org!feeder.eternal-september.org!usenet.blueworldhosting.com!feeder01 .blueworldhosting.com!peer02.iad.highwinds-media.com!news.highwinds-media.com!feed-me.highwinds-media.com!post02.iad.highwinds-media.com!fx10.iad.POSTED!not-for-mail From: Char Jackson none none.invalid Newsgroups: alt.comp.os.windows-8 Subject: Need help to purchase GPS device Message-ID: 9hm1lati4vnkb9udrvgmmb8m2ccga1ff5n 4ax.com References: milols$c9k$1 news.albasani.net XnsA496A63CD451Anilch1 wheedledeedle.moc miqf6l$anj$1 dont-email.me X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 2.0/32.652 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Lines: 27 X-Complaints-To: abuse easynews.com Organization: Easynews - www.easynews.com X-Complaints-Info: Please be sure to forward a copy of ALL headers otherwise we will be unable to process your complaint properly. I might ask for it at hotel or ask for a PC machine to connect the USB cable for charging the GPS. |

Most mains-USB power supplies are able to accept a variety of voltages ranging from US 110 V 60 Hz to European 220 or 240 V 50 Hz. You'll need a mains plug adaptor to match the plug on the power supply to the various power sockets found in different European countries. If you are buying the GPS in a country that uses 110 V (eg USA) make sure the adaptor can accept 220 V: I think some US equipment tends to be 110 V only, whereas equipment sold in Europe tends to be multi-voltage (220 V, obviously, but additionally 110 V). |
