Default Black screen after login

After login in Windows 8.1 (entering user and password) a friend of mine
gets a black screen.
I think that a repair can help.
1) can a repair be done without the W8.1 DVD, and if yes : how?
2) if she needs a W8.1 DVD : is the language important?
The W8.1 is a "dutch" version. Could an english dvd be used?
Thanks for an answer!

Google only told me of similar problems after an upgrade from W8 tot
W8.1 and this was not the case here!

You can download a Win8.1 DVD if you need it.

It's just MediaCreationTool.exe , same as Win10 I would guess.

There are lots of reasons for a black screen. The
thread here almost suggests a graphics driver from
Microsoft was installed, and that affected screen
operation when the OS starts using the driver
(after boot finishes).

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...7b2588a?auth=1

Maybe it would take tracking down a driver update from the laptop
manufacturer site, (somehow) getting into Safe Mode, and
installing that driver ? I think the selection of
"low resolution driver", is the usage of the VESA fallback
driver, possibly.

And any time I work on a problem like this, I take a backup first.
For a laptop, I remove the two screws in the bottom, pull the SATA drive
and image it on my "technician" computer. That's the computer
with a bunch of SATA cables lying on the table :-) If I screw up
and make things worse, then I can undo what I've done by
doing a restore.

Thank you Paul.
Suppose a repair does not work : how can a system restore to a previous
restore point be done when W8.1 doesn't start?

I was referring to "Backup and Restore" using
tools such as Macrium Reflect Free or similar.
You could actually back up a broken OS, by booting
the Macrium Boot CD, but then you'd still need a
second drive to hold the .mrimg file. Later, you
would restore the laptop drive from the .mrimg.
And that can be done from the Macrium Boot CD
entirely. Same approach would work with Acronis
if you owned a copy.

What's harder to back up, is a disk with disk errors
in it. That requires special techniques. If there
are bad blocks, ddrescue is one tool for the job.
Acronis also claims to support such an option
(sector by sector disk copy, able to handle
disk errors), but I've never received any feedback
that someone tried it and it worked.
