~ "This shows up on my desktop every so often???
A microsoft looking box with this "~" sign underneath
shows up periodically on my desktop. I keep deleting it but eventually it is back. One time I walked into the room and heard my computer dialing (I am on dial-up). I got to checking and that little creature was back on my desktop. I looked further and in the control panel/network I found second dialup information in there. I deleted it and thought I may have solved the problem but I didn't. The ~ keeps appearing. I did a search today and found a ~ in c:\program files\common files\microsoft\shared\works shared file type "file" and a file named Lucoms~1.ExE=1Df6f3E9.pf in c:\windows\prefetch file type "PF File". Could these be culprits? Should I delete them? Is there a way to know what files I can safely delete. I am a novice so don't get too technical. Thank you! |

~ "This shows up on my desktop every so often???
Juanita;
The tilde (~) is a result of this patch: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...30994/default. asp The file is created when certain changes are made to your address book. The files can be safely deleted. A search of Google shows many having the same harmless but possibly annoying issue. My understanding is that Microsoft is aware of the issue. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] An easier way to read newsgroup messages: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...oups/setup.asp http://dts-l.org/index.html "Juanita" wrote in message ... ~ "This shows up on my desktop every so often???
Greetings --
One of the recent "hotfixes" for OE causes the file to be created when you update the address book. It's just a duplicate copy of the address book and can be safely deleted. A permanent fix is in development. Bruce Chambers -- Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having both at once. -- RAH "Juanita" wrote in message ... A microsoft looking box with this "~" sign underneath shows up periodically on my desktop.
