Giveaway of the Day - Start Menu X Pro

I know nothing about this software, but it sounds like some might want
to use this for a Start Menu under Windows 8.

Not that impressed with it. I use Classic Start Menu - which has the
classic start button when you press the Keyboard Start buttonn - I
couldn't find a way to do that in Start Menu Pro.


There are several such choices, but my personal favorite is Start8.

If GOTD doesn't provide a link to get the download from another site,
like from the author, or the author hasn't explicitly told GOTD to *not*
use their wrapper, you can only install this software today. Tomorrow,
a month from now, or later when you need to install the software it will
phone home (and error if you don't permit or have an Internet
connection) to check the giveaway day and finding it is long after will

That's how GOTD works: today is the only day you can install.

From the above URL, yep, it's a wrappered app. GOTD's has wrappered
their phone-home-to-validate software around the program. As they state
on that web page (emphasis added), "You have 3 hours 50 minutes to
download AND INSTALL it." After that, it won't install ever again.

Do you really want to add a program to your suite of software that has
only one day on which it can be installed (and that day has long passed
to reinstall)? Even if you think having just one day to install is okay
because you'll leave it permanently installed, hardware does fail. What
are you going to do with their wrapped download when you have to replace
a failed hard disk or wipe an infected one and start over? Say bye-bye
to that GOTD-wrapped software.

Whoa! You are getting a full version of a commercial product for free.
And you are complaining about that you have 24 hours to install it and
to activate it? Geez are you hard to please. If you don't like the deal,
then purchase the product outright. No big deal! I purchased a lot of
software I seen first on GAOTD. And it is nice that the first one is
free. ;-)

If you could only install Windows once, even if it were free, would you
then rely on the availability of the OS thereafter? You won't ever be
able to install it again, like after putzing around in the registry that
makes it unbootable or replacing a failed hard disk. Are you really
going to rely on ANY software for *continued* accessibility if you can
only install it once AND only on one specific day?

Anything with the GOTD wrapper should be used as a trial version (where
there doesn't exist a fully functional trial version from the author).
Test it in a virtual machine, or on your real host if you don't mind its
pollution after an uninstall (which includes, say, a failed hard disk).

I was merely pointing out a warning to anyone not familiar with GOTD's
trick of enveloping the downloads in their phone-home wrapper that must
be afforded Internet access during installation and will abort if either
there is no such connection to GOTD's site or if their wrapper finds the
one day allowed for installation has elapsed.

As long as users know what will happen with GOTD-downloaded software
then they won't get surprised later when they later want to reinstall
that same software but find they cannot. You get just one shot for the
install, it has to be immediately (on the giveaway day) which means you
have no time to research the product if you are not already familiar
with it, and you'll never be able to reinstall it again (unless you know
how to strip off their wrapper -- hint, hint).
