Default ... kate's video cutter help?

I am using Kate's video cutter 3.0.

There are quality problems.

The first cut i made was of 6 minutes of a 14 minute 211meg avi file and the
result was 1.3 gig.

I checked mpeg for output and took the defaults for mpg under 'advanced
options' and the output was still an avi file but the size was 34 meg.
Seems it should have been about 90 meg.

The quality appeared degraded.

I think it also should have been an mpg file?

I can't seem to find any real "help" on it and wondered if anyone knew where
any explanation/help was on the web. I see the 'support' email addy but IMO
freeware support tends to reflect what was paid for it.....
