Default Downloaded update and lost all programs and icons

Hello,

Two frustrating days ago, I downloaded the latest Windows
update, rebooted my machine and promptly lost all of my
programs and icons. I have tried removing the update
files all to no avail. I now have lost my internet
connectivity because the system doesn't find the modem
when it boots. If you have a suggestion please reply. I
am willing to call you if you can walk me through a
solution.

Thanks,

Bruce
