I recently downloaded this update through the automatic microsoft update
function, and it deposited a few nasty spyware programs as well at no extra
charge........Just how secure is this update function? Does anyone know how
this happens?

Hi,

What spyware? Methinks you may have gotten something, but it wasn't from =
installing Dx9 (there is no spyware or "phone home" bits in DirectX). =
Try running Adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com
