Default installation stopped by ghost file..

I am trying a partial, not a full, installation of windows
xp. I would like to keep my old settings and files and be
able to return to Win ME if I do not like XP.

During the setup and system check, i get the bad prompt
that I have Goback installed and the installation will stop
until I delete this program or file or whatever.

I have checked and rechecked and re-rechecked but to no
avail. I cannot locate this file in my system,

I did clear out all of Nortons, systems works and utilities
because the system check indicated that it will not be
compatible, but still no GOback.

I did have that awhile ago but removed it.

Any ideas? I do not want a full installation at this time.

Any ideas..Please?

Howard

Hello Howard,

Goback actually hides in the Master Boot Record (sector 0). About the only
way you can get it out of there, is to boot to a Windows 98 boot disk and
run the following command:

FDISK /MBR

This will rewrite the boot code where Goback is hiding. However, I strongly
recommend that you backup your data before doing this just in case. It
shouldn't be a problem but in the unlikely event that sector 0 is missing
it's end of sector marker, FDISK could delete your partition table.

A way you can safeguard against this is to use some utility to backup your
Master Boot Record (sector 0, aka MBR) before you do the FDISK /MBR. Then,
even if you mess up the partition table, you can restore it using the
utility you backed it up with. No harm done.

Usually it's not a problem.
