Sound after DVD problems

Possibly stupid hypothesis but exhausted other possibilities.

I have had no problems with sound on my laptop until recently. After
watching several DVD movies, immediately afterwards sound on my laptop is
distorted. No amount of volume tweaking will fix it.

Anyone experienced anything similar?
