Default Hive file corrupted!!!

Hi,

I have 2 windows XP Pro OS on my pc, and my main one on C: gives me the
current error on startup:

STOP: C0000218 Registry file failiure
Cannot load hive (file)
Systemroot\system32\config\software
Corrupt, absent or not writable

I tried loading the hive file from regedit on my other XP OS on E:
unsuccessfuly, in order to try and repair it...

Is there any way i can repair that file, is there a software that could open
it, or does windows keep a backup of it somewhere on the disk?

I need all the help i can get, too many irrecoverable programs installed for
me to afford a format and reinstall!!!

Thank you,

Jean Claude.
