Default cd-rom incompatibility

I'm having some trouble with my cd-rom. I recently
purchased what I later found out to be a cw 4001 (labelled
as a 40/12/48x CD-RW Verbatim) from Fry's electronics.
When I installed the drive under Windows 98, it burned my
CDs fine, but when I switched to XP, I started having
problems. I can't even partially burn CDs now I'm fairly
sure that it is a Windows XP problem at this point (since
I have two of these drives, out-of-box, that don't work
under XP). I've tried several brands of CDs from several
different factories. Even windows says that my CD-RW
should function, yet I keep getting track focusing errors
and failures to close the burn. Has anyone else had
trouble like this? and is there any solution?
