Is this the final extinction of WinXP support?

No, XP support will continue for several more months...
but if you keep using XP ...any other MS software should continue to
receive updates. (MSE for example and Firefox and Chrome etc)

I'd try that same update again after a reboot...or possibly juts wait a
few days.

Once in a while I have a .NET framework update fail to install, so I
just disable the messages for that particular update.
