Default remove homegroup icon from desktop

How do I remove the "homegroup" icon from the 8.1 desktop? I have
didn't put it there nor used/create any homegroup settings on the
laptop.

It is believed that one of the "updates" put the homegroup icon on
the desktop & cannot be removed. I tried to move the icon to a
desktop folder & all it did was to create a "shortcut" in the folder
with the homegroup icon remaining. A right-click to show the context
menu do not show any means for deletion or "unpinning" (the pin is
only for the taskbar).

Will dig into it more later, but did anyone else have the same thing?
The homegroup icon just happened yesterday (or I only noticed its
appearance last night).

The laptop has only been used to view videos since installing win8
after a reformatting the boot/system partition.

Definitely happy I went back to win7 on the desktop....

"Never mind"; false alarm?

I just checked again & the homegroup icon
is no longer there. There was a win8.1 update on 11/8/2013
which most likely accounted for the icon's appearance & since
I "didn't do anything" with it, it's not there now. Will now
be checking if it appears again.

It's happened to me a couple of times on Win 8. IIRC all I had to do was
reboot the computer to get rid of it.

hmmmm...quite suspicious. Wonder if the skype is trying to
backdoor into the computer & have the ms "cloud" as part of the
homegroup.

It's probably safe to remove the tinfoil. Skype isn't that good.

Have you ensured that Homegroup and related services are not enabled.
If not using Homegroup.
- Leave the Home Group (rt click Homegroup folder in navigation pane
in Windows Explorer, Change Settings (or Winkey+C, Settings, Change PC
settings, Homegroup, Leave Homegroup)
- Disable Homegroup services (HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider)

There is also a Win7 method (proceed at your own risk)

thanks for the link. I never had the homegroup icon on win7. But then
I check what was my homegroup settings & see I have unchecked all
items so that nothing is shared on the desktop; will have to see what
happened with the laptop & win8.1 (thought I unchecked everything).

One thing tho, I have been naively thinking that a "homegroup" must
exist if one is on a "network" (lan); but it appears one doesn't as it
was just written so that it appears to be so by ms.

HomeGroup is not required. Traditionally Workgroup (same Workgroup name
on each networked machine) networking is still supported.
HomeGroup, also, is only applicable to Win7 and later o/s. For some it
is an easier way to setup multiple devices when using the supported o/s.
Others continue to prefer the earlier route (Workgroup)

The Win7 link was only provided as an option. Never used or needed it on
Win7.....thus the caution to proceed at your own risk especially since
the link provides a reg file.

Right, just disable the two services .. and Homegroup clears out of your
way.

Click the icon of a Folder on your Taskbar (it launches Windows
Explorer). On the Ribbon toolbar click "Manage".

Go to Services and look for both:

HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider

and set both to Disabled through their properties.
