Default Windows Media Player - Interesting Problem

Hey guys,

Windows Media Player in my Windows 8.1 install is acting very weird.
Every time I try to open it up, it goes through the wizard and when I
click on Next on the last page, it just starts up again. I've
reinstalled, removed and deleted any registry keys that have to do with
WMP before reinstalling, removed registry keys as well as hidden files
in my Users directory before reinstalling... all to no avail. It just
refuses to enter the program and insists on going through the wizard
without saving any settings.

Is there any fix for this problem?

You can try "Turn Windows Features On and Off" from the
"Programs and Features" control panel. Microsoft should
have made the tool removable, to meet EU requirements.
You would turn off WMP (to fake uninstalling it), then
turn on WMP (to bring it back). You should be warned
that re-installation hardly fixes stuff, due to the
registry never getting corrected by procedures like that.
But that control exists, if you want to play with it.

Also, that article mentions "wmplayer.exe" and you could
experiment with that directly. For example, start and
run "cmd.exe" to start a command prompt window. Once
the MSDOS-like window opens, try some of the suggestions
here, for direct command invocation.

wmplayer "c:\filename.wma"

Substitute the file name of some multimedia file
you think wmplayer will open.

I don't see a command line option listed there,
that actually resets anything.

The EU requirements were met by offering the 'N' versions of Windows. In the
case of Windows 8x - excludes Media Player and other Windows media-related
application/technologies(Music, Video, Skype).

The N editions of Windows 8.1 allow you to choose your own media player and
software required to manage and play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media
files. N editions are capable of downloading MP12 (for free).

My point was, that WMP should be modular, so that Microsoft
can ship Win8.1N with little additional work.

*******

This site is good for WMP trivia, especially if you
have a problem which isn't common.

Not sure how modular they could make it than giving the user the choice
to install one of their choosing or optinoally if desired Media Player.
I.e. The MP agreement wasn't the same as IE (where a link to the other
browsers was provided). Now if the EU had enough foresight to figure
out what they wanted that might have been the case...but it wasn't.

Thanks for the site. It might come in handy.
