My Win8 must be different than any others described to me here!
To get to system restore I had to go to control Panel, and in a tiny
corner listing is "View by Category". There I check small icons
and get a long list. There I find "recovery" and the rest is obvious.

Are you using Windows 8.0 or 8.1?

I would guess that the major difference is the operator :)

This is exactly the same as Windows 7.

The "View by Category" list has a major heading called "System and
Security" which has a sub-heading of "Backup your computer".
As backup and restore are ususlly partnered I would have thought
"System and Security" would be a good starting place.

Also if you have a Start orb similar to Windows 7 installed then you
could have typed 'system restore' or just 'restore' in the search
box and got to the "Restore this computer....." panel.

When I get around to installing Windows 8 in the "near" future, and
based on many comments in this newsgroup, the utility Start8 would
probably be the first add-on program I install.

The default representation isn't very useful.

It's just another hiccup in learning Win8.

How do you get to safe mode if your system does not boot due to
corrupted video? Going into the control panel is not an option of you
can't get there.

I have to say it's a feature[1], but now that you have pointed it out, I
am a bit scared...

[1] I.e., it brings to mind a cartoon I saw quite a few years ago. In
the panel were two large insects, Gregor-Samsa like. One was naked and
labeled "Bug". The other was wearing a tuxedo and labeled "Feature".

Why would the system not boot due to a corrupted video? g

That reminds me of instructions that say things like "if you can't boot,
go to this site and download XYZ" :-)

What happens when you bring up Charms and type recovery in Search?
