DLL error message
Hi all,
I just updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and I'm having a little problem that I can't seem to figure out. I get this error message. " RunDLL There is a problem starting C:\UsersJohnDoe\AppData\Local\Conduit\BackgroundCo ntainer\BackgroundContaine.dll The specified module could not be found" I get this error message when I first reboot and I have no idea what's causing it. Albert (make it S instead of Z to email me |

Albert (make it S instead of Z to email me If occurring on a boot it may be related to a program running at Startup. In Win8 use Task Manager to review Start Up applications. Start Up programs (and also the source of the Rundll error) can be loaded via the registry via the Run, RunOnce and other registry keys. One can also use Microsoft's Fellow Mark Russinovich's program 'Autoruns for Windows v11.70' to show what programs are configured to run during system bootup. This program also shows the entries in the order Windows processes them. Albert Conduit is some kind of toolbar thing that comes with other programs. Some examples here, of people who had it. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...ngine-a-virus/ http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...90102/conduit/ Conduit is classed a "Potentially Unwanted Program" or PUP. Regular AV programs will not normally remove a PUP, because it's not "offically malware". The people who write PUPs, do it to earn money from advertising, and the lawyers who work for those people, will sue the AV companies if they remove it. The lawyers will claim the search toolbar is "something the customer wanted" :-( Which is bull**** of course. But the symptoms in your case are, something *did* attempt to remove it. Perhaps you ran ADWCleaner or something, which is an example of a program that removes content of that "class". When you delete a thing like BackgroundContaine.dll and the Startup items still refer to it, it causes an error message to pop up, which is what you're seeing. Removing that item from Startups, as Winston suggests, should make the error go away. Now, a good PUP, really isn't something people want on their computer. Perhaps you did try to remove it, and just that Startup item remains. A good PUP will re-infect the computer and put back both the DLL and the Startup item. I cannot conclude from seeing this message, whether you're actually fully clear of it or not. But at least you'll have some idea what to look for. I don't know for sure it is Conduit, but my knee-jerk reaction is, you had a PUP, and part of it is removed. I don't think Malwarebytes MBAM for example, is designed to remove it. The ADWCleaner is the right kind of tool to try. But something did already try to remove it, and that message is evidence the thing is half-gone. Paul |

Would a registry cleaner remove the offending bits from the registry? |

Paul The worst thing about that little devil is a browser-hijacker that often comes with it; named something like "SearchSafe", it puts an icon in the systray. I got rid of it in four steps. 1. Remove it from all browser search engines list. 2. CCleaner, Start Up; remove. 3. Uninstall it from installed programs. 4. Reset browser home pages. Ed |

Albert (make it S instead of Z to email me Well, I downloaded a anti-malware program Malwarebytes today and it found about 285 problems and when I deleted them it seemed to help matters out a great deal. I'll have more time in the future to see if it's taken care of the problem (S). I do know it's not showing the error message when I boot it up anymore. Thanks for everyone's input all of it was much appreciated if not well understood ;-) Albert (make it S instead of Z to email me |
