I have now got my Windows 8.1 computer running so I do not ever have to
look at the floating advertising icons of the new interface as all of my
most used programs appear in the Desktop taskbar. To close the
computer, I can right click in the Windows icon on the left end of the
taskbar and it then reacts similar to Windows XP. I also like having
access to all of the Windows functions from the Windows Icon on the
taskbar. I like the taskbar icons where one icon represents multiple
windows of the same program.

There is one more thing I would like to do. Is there away to pin a
folder to the taskbar. (I do not use the Start, so am not interested in
Pinning to the Start. )

If the folder could be pinned to the taskbar I could remove more icons
from the desktop and have a clean desktop to work from. (In Windows XP
you could put folders in the taskbar.) I have most of my data in a
couple of primary folders.

I have my Windows 8.1 computer arranged into a usable research computer
with email and the internet access, a couple of more tweaks and it will
be good.

I think it goes like this... Press the Windows button to get to
the start screen. Start typing "File Explorer". Right-click on the
File Explorer button. Select "add to taskbar". Then change the
taskbar icon property target to "D:\" or whatever.

Also, to backup all of your icons on the taskbar. Enter this in
the Explorer address bar...

C:\Users\Master\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

....and copy all of them to a safe place away from your Windows
drive.

That works for one incidence of file explorer. I already have that to
access the hard drive. However I can put only one incidence of file
Explorer on that task bar at a time.

I would like to have on with My Documents, and a couple of other where
I have a lot of data stored, so I could click on the taskbar icon and
see the data is subfolders.

Windows 8.1 is quite restrictive, as you can only have one incidence of
many things, that you like to run multiple copies

Use the "jump list" for multiple locations.

Is this what you want?
Right click the task bar (I think) and there is an option to add
toolbars. Click new and then browse to the folder you want and "open"
it. It might say select, but still either way.. That creates a
toolbar the opens vertically showing all the items in the folder.
I've used it to point to
C:/users/user/appdata/local/microsoft/windows/start menu/programs (I
think that's the path, I'm not on my windows PC to verify). It's just
like the start menu in windows 8.

Jump Lists were introduced in prior operating systems for handling that
task.

Optionally, if necessary one can re-enable the Quick Launch or create
another toolbar with the appropriate paths in the shortcut.

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

And that's the folder for the all users programs. There are two menus
technically, the one your notes and the one in the user's home folder.
I made two toolbars. Win7 combines them behind the scenes to make
the one menu. Actually if he downloads any one of the free start
button programs he gets the old start menu back and rid any desktop
icons. Just put them on the start menu like he did in win7.

I've been using win 8 since 2 days after it was released and have never
gone back to win7. I don't find a thing wrong with it. I will qualify
that with "for the way I use windows".

I have not tried this in win8, but it might be worth a try for you

Having upgraded from Windows XP, I have not had much experience with the
Jump List. This looks like what I want to do.

Is the Jump List dynamic or can it manually be populated?

OR can folders be permanently attached to a the Jump List of an icon?
