Default Folder not accessible

Using Windows 7 Pro. Trying to open Documents and Settings folder I get
a 'Not Accessible' Access is Denied message. I am logged on as
Administrator and 'Hidden Files' are shown etc. I pretty sure I have all
the 'permissions' settings set right, but maybe not.... anyone know what
is blocking access, or do U need more info? Thanks.

Much has changed since Windows XP. Possibly your last or more recent o/s?

Starting with Vista, the default paths changed. "Documents and Settings"
became "Users." "Application Data" became "AppData\Roaming." "My
Documents" became "Documents. Unfortunately many programmers were not
flexibile having written programs that hard-coded 'Documents and
Settings' in lieu of allowing or adopting Windows guidelines. To
accommodate backward compatibility and those programming weaknesses MSFT
provided a number of 'Junction Points', purposely and correctly hid them
and properly set security to prevent people from using and accessing them.

If your are seeing 'Documents and Settings' appearing as a possible
clickable folder then Windows 7 is configured to disable 'Hide protected
operating system files'
- Uncheck the 'Hide protected....' option then 'Documents and
Settings' which is not a folder and only a Junction Point will be hidden
as intended.

In the future, look under Users for your specific Windows profile (i.e.
your Windows logon name) and your default Windows provided folders (e.g.
Documents. Desktop, Music, Pictures, etc.).

Thanks very much for the education. After a recent hosing of my XP
system I installed Windows 7 Pro. Needless to say I am not at all
familiar with it. Thanks very much again for the reply. Nice to know its
nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the info. I read the link you provided. It was reassuring to
know I wasn't really missing something. Thanks

You're welcome. Good luck. In time you'll be quite comfortable with
Windows 7 Pro. It does have a few features that force some behavioral
changes but for the for most part it won't take long to become comfortable.

Feel free to ask more questions - almost all folks in this forum will
provide value added answers.

OK - here's one (-:

Why did W7 64 bit, right up to pre-release, allow the 32-bit shell to be
called by 32-bit software (I think that's the correct terminology), but
not in the final release? Or, rather than pointlessly crying over spilt
milk: is there any way round that problem? (Other than using virtual
machines that is.)
