Perplexing Windows Media Player 12 Problem
Suddenly this evening, about one-half of my wave files (*.wav) will no
longer play on Windows Media Player version 12. I can find no distinction between the wave files that will play and those that will not. Last Sunday, they all played as they normally do. Now I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codex might not be installed on your computer." The "Web Help" is no help at all. I transferred these SAME FILES to my old Windows XP laptop for comparison, and Windows Media Player version 11 played them with no problem. I already tried doing a System Restore back to a month previous, which did not solve the problem. Before I abandon Windows Media Player and convert to VLC Media Player, I am hoping someone reading this group has had a similar problem and perhaps a solution. Thanks. |

One thing that might help would be to download the freeware Codec's found at; http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/deta..._8_codecs.html They add to or replace those supplied by Microsoft, especially if Windows is complaining of a codec problem. It might say windows 8 in the URL but the codec package has been updated to include windows 10 as you will see on the web site. Most likely all you would need is the standard codec package unless you work with video quite a bit. For video I would go for the advanced codec package which also includes the standard as part of the advanced. |

Not only can I play *.wav files again, but my Cyberlink CD burning program, which had also been malfunctioning, is now working properly. The program I uninstalled is called Video to Video. A shame, because I really liked that program. |

No. Media Player is, and always was, my default program for .wav files. If the association was screwed up, System Restore should have corrected that. |
