Windows Defender and Norton Antivirus?
Need some info? I had a problem today and it appears to be between Windows
Defender and Norton Antivirus. I'm running on Win7 64bit and have Norton Antivirus latest updated version running in live mode and have latest updated version of Malwarebytes which I run full scans manually on about a two week basis. Today, I had some notice from Windows Defender and Norton Antivirus and had to manually delete them. I ran the full scan with Malwarebytes and no problems. Norton did it's normal scan and no problem. Probably is a conflict with Windows Defender. What is Windows Defender and is it really needed and does it conflict with other Antivirus programs. How do you disable Windows Defender? Thanks for any insights/and suggestions. charliec |

It's above average in quality, about the same level as Norton. Doesn't matter much which you run, but you should have only one anti-malware running. So choose. Me, I'd pick Defender over Norton, but there are many programs than are better than either of those. Go alt.comp.anti-virus, and you'll get lots of advice. probably more than you want. ;-) To disable Defender, go to the control panel. I go to Control Panel, but where do I go from there to find Defender? |

Defender is an antimalware application unlike Norton which provides both Antivirus and Antimalware. - the wiser choice when comparing Defender and Norton is to disable Defender in favor of Norton - Antivirus protection is better than no antivirus protection. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

MS Security Essentials and MS Windows Defender are essentially the same program under different names which depend on which Windows version you are running. MSE is an Antimalware/Antivirus program for Vista and Windows 7 Windows Defender is an Antimalware/Antivirus for Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 Windows Defender on Windows 7 (the op's system) is only antimalware, thus not essentially the same as MSE. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

Which 'Defender' are you talking about? It has AV and AM now but it didn't used to have AV. |

Windows Defender without the AV component shouldn't conflict with an actual AV though, it's usually the on-access (on open or on close) file hooking that creates the conflict. The OP wasn't clear about which program complained. |

The OP wasn't clear about which program complained. Agree, the original post wasn't entirely clear nor was the NAV version provided. Iirc,by design Win7 and later compatible NAV versions automatically disable Defender. The op hasn't returned but has received sufficient info to address (disable Defender with NAV present) the issue if Defender and NAV are both running resident. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |
