E-Mail: Spectrum -- Time Warner Cable -- RoadRunner
NOTE WELL: The subscriber certificate for Time Warner's mail.twc.com
POP3 server expired today without a new certificate being installed. Secure access to E-mail from the server via an E-mail client (e.g., Thunderbird) is not possible. Appearently, Web-mail access still works. -- David E. Ross The Crimea is Putin's Sudetenland. The Ukraine will be Putin's Czechoslovakia. Appearently, Web-mail access still works. | You should be able to switch back to normal email access for the time being. Most servers still provide that. Typically port 587 for SMTP and 110 for POP3. Then switch the setting for connection security to "none". There are 3 possible connection types, any or all of which may be supported by a given server. Basic is usually 110 and 587. STARTTLS can be on any port because the client program negotiates encryption after contact is made. TLS (In TBird it's "SSL/TLS" even though SSL is an outdated term.) is usually on port 465 for SMTP and 995 for POP3. TLS makes contact encrypted so it has to go to a port that can handle that. You can check your ISP website to see whether they still support non-encrypted email and what the settings should be. |

However, this incident indicates a serious lack of attention to issues of secure Internet. -- David E. Ross The Crimea is Putin's Sudetenland. The Ukraine will be Putin's Czechoslovakia.
