Default Choppy sound

Asus motherboard (M5A78L-M). Via sound.
The audio is choppy, as though the jack were
loose. Audio cuts out and in. (Somewhere I saw
the term "helicopter sound". It is a bit like that.
Or sometimes there seems to be one channel
that's faint while the other is normal.

I actually tried
swapping out the board because I have a
spare, but that didn't solve it. I have an
identical board on another computer that's
fine. Both have motherboard drivers installed.
I'm not sure what else to look at. I've tested
with different speakers.

(This is the box that I thought might have
a faulty PS, but it turns out that problem
was just a difference between versions of
HWMonitor. The newer version seems to
show erratic numbers.)

What is the source of the sound? (URI, CD, DVD, or what file extension?)
What application are you using?

I'm glad you asked that. I was using VLC and
Firefox, but maybe FF had the VLC plugin. It
was VLC 2.15 and your question reminded me
that I'd had trouble with that update.
I uninstalled and put in v. 2.05. Now it's fine.
I can't believe I forgot about having had the
problem before! Thanks.

Ah, I have had similar under XP - the later version (2.1x) wouldn't play
some video files that the 2.0x version would.

Windows 7 Utilmate SP1 (x64)
VLC 2.2.4

I have not seen this problem. In your case, it could be any of the
following:

* a failure of your Internet connection to deliver broadband speed

* a slow or impaired processor in your PC

* a corrupted download of the VLC installer

* attempting to use an x64 version on an x32 PC or (much less likely)
vice-versa

The current version is VLC 2.24.

All of those can probably be ruled out, though I
can't say for certain that I ever tried two different
downloads. It was v. 2.15 32-bit, on Win7-64,
playing mp4 videos locally. (MP3's seemed OK.)
But the exact same thing happened
on my XP machine. (Unfortunately I didn't remember
at first.) The one common factor I can think of is
that both have the same onboard Via audio. But
the problem was gone once I went back to v. 2.05.

Maybe there was a problem in 2.15 that got fixed.
Maybe it's a Via conflict. In any case, 2.05 does
everything fine so I have no need to update.

Yes. Thanks. I had v. 2.15 on hand. I always keep
copies when I download and rarely concern myself with
getting the very latest. (I'm using Firefox 36 currently
because I got tired of needing to add new extensions
to fix things the Mozilla people break in their crazed,
high-speed update cycle.)

This has been an interesting experience in software
updates. I wasted a lot of time chasing two red herrings
that I thought were hardware problems:

1) VLC 2.15 playing choppy sound.

2) The most recent v. 1.3 of HWMonitor displaying
entirely different voltage readings from v. 1.1.5 that
I had been using.

I found very little info when searching for "Windows
choppy sound" but quickly found lots of discussions
when I searched for "VLC choppy sound". Yet the
problems seem to vary by version and hardware, so
maybe it's a hardware compatibility issue. In any case,
v. 2.05 works fine for me. And I can't even find a link
to a versions change log at the Videolan site. It seems
highly unlikely that there's something critical in v. 2.2.4.

There was a problem in older versions of VLC that appear fixed in 2.2.4.
(It might have been fixed before 2.2.4.) While playing streaming audio
from radio stations that broadcast over the Internet, VLC would stop
downloading. Instead, it would keep replaying the same set of packets,
over and over again. The set of packets would be sufficiently large
that the repetition would not be immediately noticed.

I read somewhere (possibly at Slashdot) that the next version of VLC
will have some very new features.

I think it is a great media player, although it seems to have trouble here
playing an ordinary audio CD.
Now I'm waiting for a version which supports Chromecast...
