I tried "reset" but it doesn't install Windows 10 1809.
Windows 10 1803 suddenly wouldn't boot.
No restore point existed. Was forced to put 1803 iso in optical drive & "reset" 1803. Everything is working now but all non-Microsoft installed programs. They have to be reinstalled. And all my customizations need to be done again. Since 1803 is already mucked up, I may as well upgrade to 1809. After using MediaCreationTool I have an 1809 DVD. What is the best way to update to 1809 without losing all data? I tried "reset" but it doesn't install 1809. |

I'm way past that point today since I already reset 1803. And I already have the 1809 iso from that page on the DVD. When I reboot to that DVD, I only see two options. [1] Reset (which is not what I want) [2] Wipe out and install (which is not what I want) Does an option to install 1809 on top of 1803 even exist? |

That will download the Windows 10 Update Assistant which worked form me to upgrade from 1803 to 1809 with no need to reinstall anything. After you're done, go back to Windows Update and there will be some. |

What is the best way to update to 1809 without losing all data? Yes this was rocket science some time ago but the solution that works 100% of the time in 2018 is to copy/backup the data to an external drive and even if you do a clean installation by wiping the hard disk, you still have your data intact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried "reset" but it doesn't install 1809. Yes it requires knowledge of how rockets are made. How did you find this newsgroup? Insert 1809 DVD in drive, execute Setup.exe off the DVD. That will take a running copy of 1803 to 1809, keeping all programs and user data. That's how 1809 got on a couple of drives here, by using Setup.exe off the DVD. Note that, if the 1809 ISO file is sitting in your Downloads folder, you can right-click and select "Mount" and a virtual optical drive will appear in File Explorer. Run setup.exe off the virtual optical drive. On the first reboot, the virtual optical drive will be dismounted, and won't interfere with the multiple reboots to come (while 1809 installs). Paul |

Paul THANK YOU. Running 1809 setup.exe from an 1803 bootup is what I will do! I had been trying to upgrade 1803 to 1809 by BOOTING off the 1809 DVD. But booting off the 1809 DVD only seems to give me RESET & WIPEOUT. The 1809 iso is actually a file on a DIFFERENT 1803 laptop. I burned 1809 to DVD on that 1803 laptop as a kind of sneakernet. I would love to have kept my programs and user data but the 1803 forced RESET already wiped out almost all the previous 1803 program associations. If I have to do all that customization anyway, I may as well do it on 1809. |

[good] Microsoft web page "update to 1809 now" (not download 1809 now) [better] Burn 1809 DVD to run that "1809 setup.exe" on that 1809 DVD [best] Download an "1809 iso file" to run "setup.exe" on that 1809 iso file |

From the dvd or flash stick from within Windows, run setup.exe DONOT BOOT THEM That will install new version and keep all of your programs & settings. Did it 4 times to get 1809 installed Thank you for the advice to run setup.exe to just "update" from 19-803 to 109 without wiping out the data and program associations. I should have done that instead of the RESET which wiped out my program associations, turning everything into portable apps in a strange way. While booted to 1803 I put the 1809 DVD in and clicked on the setup.exe on that 1809 DVD, where I did a test run where I stopped at the last message below until my backup over wifi (taking hours) finishes. setup.exe .... Thank you for the Macrium Reflect advice. I don't think Macrium will do anything since I already lost all my program associations during the 1803 RESET from the 1803 DVD. In a funny way, I turned ALL my programs into "portable programs" in that most of them (like Firefox or Chrome) seem to still work if I run them from their shortcuts, but they can't be set to the default program for any given file type. That means a RESET is almost like turning all programs into portable programs. What I did was on the working laptop I created a public share. Then over wifi I am copying things I care about to that public share. That is still running (for hours). When the copy is done, while booted to 1803, I can run the 1809 dvd setup.exe without worries of losing my data. |
