When I try to download win 10 ISO using XP it stops part way and says
source file can not be found, does not matter who I try to get it from.
Would I have more success using an old slow win 7 laptop.

Windows XP users are considered stupid by Microsoft's AI system and
you've just proved it here.

Longshot, but worth mentioning: Did you download to
an NTFS partition? FAT32 won't hold a file over about
4 GB.

There are two benefits to the Win7 laptop

1) Guaranteed NTFS partition for C: , with
no 4GB storage limit like a FAT32 partition
would have.

2) The download method used, it actually fetches
a *different* version of the DVD (shocker!).

If you *had* succeeded in downloading the 64-bit
Win10 by using WinXP, you would have been sorry,
because it needs a *dual-layer* DVD if you're
using DVD media. If you're using USB sticks
for this, then (2) makes no difference.

Here are some media sizes for your consideration.

WinXP (page offers direct-download links for 24 hours)

Win10_1903_V1_English_x64.iso 4,939,528,192 bytes == dual layer
Win10_1903_V1_English_x32.iso 3,493,140,480 bytes

Win7 (page offers MediaCreationTool1903, depends on .NET 4+)

Win10-64bit-mediacreation-1903-7OSes.iso 3,967,483,904 bytes
Win10-32bit-mediacreation-1903-7OSes.iso 2,894,200,832 bytes

I think now you can see how a Win7 laptop
is of benefit to you for this effort. The
outcome is different (and more manageable).

Paul
