Rechargeables are still disposable batteries. They don't last forever.
They're still chemical. They have a limited number of charge cycles
(and even a partial charge counts).

disposable batteries means one-time use, then dispose.

rechargeable batteries are not that.

Didn't bother looking up NiCad or NiMH battery charging since I'm
guessing you're using Lithium rechargeable batteries.

you'd guess wrong.

lithium aa batteries are *not* rechargeable. modern battery chargers
are designed to auto-detect such a battery and refuse to charge it if
someone tries.

lithium rechargeable batteries are ~3.7v, versus ~1.5v for a typical aa
battery, so they do not exist in standard sizes because the much higher
voltage will almost certainly cause damage, especially if the device
uses multiple aa batteries.

however, there is a company that designed a lithium polymer (~3.7v)
rechargeable aa battery and an internal buck converter to regulate it
down to 1.5v. it's an incredibly bad idea for all sorts of reasons, but
that didn't stop them from making it. keep in mind, this battery has an
always-on active regulator, even when the host device is fully powered
off.

I used to leave my smartphone plugged in all the time when it was at
home. That meant there was numerous tiny recharge cycles. Batteries
heat up during charging.

not significantly, and it's designed for that situation.

The outgassing eventually made the battery
pregnant.

you should have used protection.

I would know until I went to replace the battery and took off
the armor case to notice the bulge in the backplate.

that has nothing to do with how often or how much it was charged and
everything to do with a defective battery, and is very dangerous.

Rechargeables have a limited number of charge cycles with capacity
waning over successive charge cycles. Plus, how you going to charge
those rechargeables in a power outage when you need that flashlight?

What I'm trying to point out, is that a device (TV remote) that is
designed to work with standard and alcaline batteries with a nominal
voltage of 1.5, but work fine with rechargeable batteries that have a
nominal voltage of 1.2.

Thus that device will also work fine with a very much spent alkaline
battery that gives only 1.2, probably leaking. The device will not give
any hint that the batteries are dead and should be replaced.

My Roku devices have the capability to measure the status of the batteries
in the remote and display that on screen as a percentage. No idea how/if
they differentiate between standard alkaline versus rechargeable, though. I
assume the rechargeables would never show 100%.

Curious.
Nice feature.

About flash rechargeable torches, I routinely charge them periodically.
The strategy has to be different.

Do they 'like' to be fully charged, or are they happier at something less
than a full charge? I try not to charge things like that too often out of
concern that a full charge is hard on it, but I could be completely wrong

I guess they don't care, but in this case they are sealed units and I
have no access to measure the voltage. When they need charging they
blink for a second or two. So I pick the "other" torch and charge the
first when back home.

In "modern times" the rechargeable batteries have no memory and are
charged via "intelligent" chargers that should know how not to
overcharge them.

Didn't bother looking up NiCad or NiMH battery charging since I'm
guessing you're using Lithium rechargeable batteries. Yes, not charging
to full will increase the number of charging cycles for the battery.
However, that also means less up-time when inuse, and that probably
means more charging cycles.

https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/...ased_batteries

I used to leave my smartphone plugged in all the time when it was at
home. That meant there was numerous tiny recharge cycles. Batteries
heat up during charging. The outgassing eventually made the battery
pregnant. I would know until I went to replace the battery and took off
the armor case to notice the bulge in the backplate. I'd have to
replace the battery at about a year. Yes, with better handling the
battery would survive longer, but then I'd be heading out the door with
a partially charged battery which means less usage time during the day.
So, my choice would be to charge only partially to keep the charge count
up but have less up-time for when I wanted to use the phone, or buy
another battery in a year. To have max charge for max up-time of the
smartphone when away from home, I opted for buying another battery in a
year. The $7/year cost was well worth having more up-time for the
phone. Of course, that strategy only works for phones that have
replaceable batteries, and why I don't by phones with sealed batteries
(which can be replaced but not intended for such, and you may have to
buy a seal kit after damaging the seal to open the phone).

I suspect that it is better on phones to charge via a "1 unit" charger.
Ie, slowly.

Same here. I'm on my second one as the original's left button
microswitch failed a couple of years ago. After nearly 20 years
of use. Am constantly in fear that Logitech stop making them. I
should buy a couple of spares to last the rest of my life. I do
wish they still did a wired one that was a bit cheaper.

They do them only wireless now? :-(

Yes. Which is stupid as the mouse never moves.

Trackball ;-)

I know I'm in the great minority, but I don't think that wireless is
a great alternative even for a regular moveable mouse. There are two
reasons why I'm against wireless mice:

1. It adds needless trouble and a needless (small) expense for
batteries.

Yes.

2. It makes it much more likely that the mouse gets knocked off the
desk and smashed on the floor.

Yes.

Having said that, I'll add that I use a wireless mouse. Why? Because
the mouse that I like so much only comes that way.

I use them only when I must or I find no alternative.

You forgot one important issue: they are less secure. The protocol has
been broken, I think, so a bad guy can read the mouse or keyboard.

Just noticed on amazon that the M570 is almost half price at £35. Might be
worth getting one as a spare.

Looks like there's a new model, MX Ergo, for £99 RRP!!!

About July 11th 2019 I bought a new Logitech M705 Marathon mouse From
Amazon. For the last couple weeks it has become erratic, the cursor stops
then jumps a little hop at a time, this seems to occur more and more, tried
new batteries but no help.
If I tap it lightly on the desk it works OK for a couple hours then starts
jerking again, Seems like something making a poor contact inside,. So for
the last 3 days I have been trying to contact by phone to get an RMA but
every time I get through the infamous machine voice tells me they are
unable to respond to my call, TRY AGAIN LATTER.

Well after about 30 tries I decided to give up and take the mouse apart and
see if I could find the problem.
So I took out 1 screw at the back and 2 hidden under the feet But it still
seemed pretty well together, then I took my guitar picks and tried to push
or pull hidden J hooks at the sides, nothing budged so I tried a litte
(much) more pressure and finally 1 pick went right through and tore off the
optical sensor assembly!!!
Well so much for that mouse, I threw the deceased remains in the garbage
and am now using my old faithful M510.
I will order a new one but will stick to the M510, it seems to fit my hand
better.

Rene

I have a 510 wired mouse and it fits my hand great.
I had a problem with the wires breaking where they went into the mouse, took
it apart and shortened the wires etc and it worked great for a long time.
Had some wheel problems with it later and finally bought another mouse, off
brand one that works well.
Many years of excellent game playing service.

I just bought 2 new M510 wireless, 1 for my son and a Spare for myself
as my older M510 is working fine. Amazon had them on for $27.49.

Well, I went to a local Carrefour the other day, because I knew that
they had a couple M705 mouses. Turns out they had the bad version. Guess
I'll have to look elsewhere for a backup.
