Did you modify IE's proxy settings for use with your VPN?

I too have this problem, sometime. It is not based on any IE
"connection" or proxy setting. It seems that XP may not correctly
detect that the Internet is opened. This will try to use the next
available "connection" to get a Internet connection, which happens to
be a VPN connection, using Microsoft's PPTP VPN connection.
